What are objectives of the grade 1 Music subject curriculum for students in Vietnam?

Based on Section III of the Appendix to the General Education Program for the Music subject, issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the Grade 1 Music subject curriculum is developed as follows:

The primary Music subject curriculum helps students initially familiarize themselves with general music knowledge, the diversity of the music world, and traditional musical values;

In addition, the subject helps students to develop initial musical skills; aesthetic emotions and love for music, and engage in age-appropriate musical activities;

Contribute to forming and developing in students essential qualities (patriotism, compassion, diligence, honesty, responsibility) and common capacities (self-control and self-learning, communication and cooperation, problem-solving, and creativity).

What are the characteristics of the Grade 1 Music subject in Vietnam?

Based on Section I of the Appendix to the General Education Program for the Music subject, issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the characteristics of the Grade 1 Music subject are as follows:

- Music is an art form that uses sound to express human emotions, attitudes, awareness, and thoughts.

Music is an essential part of cultures, deeply connected and influential to social life.

Music enriches the spiritual values of humanity, serves as a medium for people to explore the world, and contributes to enhancing the quality of life.

- In schools, music education creates opportunities for students to experience and develop musical abilities - an expression of aesthetic capacity with the following components: music performance, music appreciation and understanding, music application and creativity; contributing to the discovery and nurturing of musically gifted students.

At the same time, through song content, musical activities, and educators' methods, music education helps develop in students qualities of patriotism, compassion, diligence, honesty, and responsibility, along with capacities of self-control and self-learning, communication and cooperation, problem-solving, and creativity to become well-rounded citizens both in personality and in physical and mental harmony.

- In the general education program, the content of the Music subject is divided into two stages.

- Basic education stage: Music is a compulsory subject from grade 1 to grade 9, including basic knowledge and skills in singing, musical instruments, music listening, music reading, music theory, and music appreciation.

The music education program helps students experience, explore, and express themselves through musical activities to develop aesthetic capacity, recognize the diversity of the music world, and the relationship between music and culture, history, and other art forms; simultaneously forming a consciousness to protect and promote traditional musical values.

- Career-oriented education stage: Music is an elective subject based on students' aspirations and career orientation.

The subject content includes expanded and advanced knowledge and skills in singing, musical instruments, music listening, music reading, music theory, and music appreciation. Students with interests, talents, or career orientations related to music may choose additional study modules.

The music education content at this stage helps students continue to develop practical skills, expand their understanding of music in relation to cultural, historical, and social factors, apply knowledge to life, meet personal interests, and approach music-related careers.

What is the perspective on developing the Grade 1 Music teaching program in Vietnam?

Based on Section II of the Appendix to the General Education Program for the Music subject, issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the characteristics of the Grade 1 Music subject are as follows:

The Music subject curriculum adheres to the fundamental regulations stated in the General Program, including: general orientations for all subjects (perspectives, objectives, required achievements, education plan, and orientations on educational content, methods, and outcome assessment, conditions for implementation and program development); orientations for developing the Music subject curriculum across three educational levels. Simultaneously, based on the characteristics of the subject, the following perspectives are emphasized in program development:

Perspective 1. The curriculum focuses on developing students' musical abilities, an expression of aesthetic capacity in the musical field through educational content with basic, practical knowledge; emphasizing practice; contributing to the harmonious development of virtue, intellect, physical fitness, and aesthetics, and career orientation for students.

Perspective 2. The curriculum inherits and promotes the strengths of the current Music program while learning from the program development experience of advanced education systems worldwide. The educational content of the program is designed in a manner combining spiral progression with linear progression; clearly illustrating the artistic characteristics of music and national cultural identity; highly integrated in lower grades, gradually differentiated in higher grades.

Perspective 3. The curriculum creates diverse learning activities, with rich content and forms, to meet students' needs and interests; creating emotions, joy, and interest in learning.

Perspective 4. The curriculum ensures both core educational content unified across the country and flexibility to suit the diverse conditions and learning capacities of students from different regions.
