What are contents of Vietnamese Language subject for 3rd grade students in Vietnam?
Based on Subsection 2, Section 5 of the General Education Program for the Vietnamese Language subject issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, 3rd grade students will learn the following content in the Vietnamese Language subject:
* Vietnamese Language Knowledge
- How to write a text title
- Vocabulary based on themes
- Synonyms and antonyms
- Words denoting objects, activities, and qualities
- Basics of declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences: characteristics shown through punctuation, sentence markers, and the use of each sentence type
- Uses of dashes (placed at the beginning of a line to indicate direct speech by a character); quotation marks (indicate direct quotations or dialogue); colons (signal explanations, listings)
- Rhetorical comparison: characteristics and effects
- Basics of paragraphs and multi-paragraph texts: identifying features
- Basics of turn-taking in group discussions
- Types of text and genres
+ Paragraph recounting a read story or an activity done
+ Paragraph describing an object
+ Paragraph sharing emotions, feelings
+ Paragraph explaining why one likes a character in a story
+ Paragraph introducing an object, a narrative text recounting an event including 2 - 3 incidents, short notices or news reports, pre-printed forms
- Information using images, numbers (non-verbal communication means)
* Literary Knowledge
- Lesson derived from the text
- Setting and time
- Thoughts and actions of characters
* Materials
(1) Literary Texts
- Fairy tales, fables, short stories; descriptive paragraphs (texts)
- Poems, nursery rhymes, folk songs, vernacular verses
Text length: stories around 200 - 250 words, descriptive texts around 180 - 200 words, poems around 80 - 100 words
(2) Informational Texts
- Texts introducing an object, narrative texts recounting an event including 2 - 3 incidents
- Short notices, pre-printed forms
Text length: about 120 - 150 words.

What is the age of 3rd grade students in Vietnam?
Based on Article 33 of the Primary School Regulations issued with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT, the age of primary students is regulated as follows:
Age of Primary Students
- The age of students entering the first grade is 06 years and is calculated by year. Children with disabilities, those with physical or intellectual developmental delays, children from areas with special economic and social conditions, ethnic minority children, orphaned children, children returning from abroad, and foreign children studying and working in Vietnam may enter the first grade at an older age than prescribed but not more than 03 years. Cases of children entering the first grade more than 03 years older than prescribed will be decided by the Head of the Department of Education and Training.

Therefore, typically the age of students entering the first grade is 06 years and is calculated by year. By progressing through grades annually, 3rd grade students are typically 8 years old.
Note: the above regulation excludes cases of students repeating a grade or starting school earlier/later than the prescribed age and other special cases as regulated by law.
Who has the authority to select the Vietnamese Language textbooks for 3rd grade students in Vietnam?
Clause 1, Article 32 of the Education Law 2019 regulates textbooks for general education as follows:
General Education Textbooks
1. General education textbooks are regulated as follows:
a) Textbooks implement the general education program, concretizing the objectives and content of the general education program regarding students' qualities and competences; provide guidelines on teaching methods and methods for assessing educational quality; the content and forms of textbooks should not include ethnic, religious, professional, gender, age, and social status biases; textbooks appear as printed books, Braille books, e-books;
b) Each subject may have one or several textbooks; private investment in the compilation of textbooks is implemented; the publication of textbooks is conducted in accordance with the law;
c) The Provincial People's Committee decides on the selection of textbooks for stable use in general education institutions within the locality as regulated by the Minister of Education and Training;
d) Local educational materials compiled by the Provincial People's Committee meet the demand and are suited to local characteristics, evaluated by the provincial evaluation council and approved by the Minister of Education and Training.

Article 18 of the Primary School Regulations issued with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT also contains regulations on the selection and use of textbooks in the teaching and learning process in primary schools.
As regulated by the Minister of Education and Training, the Provincial People's Committee decides on the selection of Vietnamese textbooks for stable use in 3rd grade education in general education institutions within their locality.
Therefore, the textbooks used in different localities may vary; however, they will still ensure the subject content according to the General Education Program for the Vietnamese Language subject issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT.
