According to sub-item 1, Item 5 of the General Education Program for Literature, issued under Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the compulsory and compulsory elective literary works are stipulated as follows:
- Compulsory works:
+ "Nam quốc sơn hà" (Ly Dynasty)
+ "Hịch tướng sĩ" of Tran Quoc Tuan
+ "Bình Ngô đại cáo" of Nguyen Trai
+ "Truyện Kiều" of Nguyen Du
+ "Văn tế nghĩa sĩ Cần Giuộc" of Nguyen Dinh Chieu
+ "Tuyên ngôn Độc lập" of Ho Chi Minh
- Compulsory elective works:
+ Vietnamese Folk Literature
++ Select at least 4 representative works from 4 categories in the treasure of Vietnamese folklore: legends, fairy tales, fables, humorous stories
++ Select at least 3 folk songs on the topics: homeland; love, family affection; human and society (lyrical or satirical)
++ Select at least 1 Vietnamese epic
++ Select at least 1 verse narrative from Vietnamese ethnic minorities
++ Select at least 1 script from cheo or tuong dramas
+ Written Vietnamese Literature, select at least 1 work from each of the following authors:
++ Nom poetry, argumentative prose by Nguyen Trai
++ Sino-Vietnamese poetry by Nguyen Du
++ Nom poetry by Ho Xuan Huong
++ Nom poetry by Nguyen Dinh Chieu
++ Nom poetry by Nguyen Khuyen
++ Stories and poetry by Nguyen Ai Quoc - Ho Chi Minh
++ Short stories, and novels by Nam Cao
++ Novels, reportage by Vu Trong Phung
++ Poetry by Xuan Dieu before the August Revolution

+ Foreign Literature, select at least 1 work from each of the following literatures: English, French, American, Greek, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Indian.
Thus, alongside the texts suggested by textbook authors and teachers, the general education program for Literature must include the above compulsory texts to ensure core educational content nationwide.

What are the required outcomes for upper secondary school students after completion of the general education program for Literature in Vietnam?
According to sub-item 2, Item 4 of the General Education Program for Literature, issued under Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the required outcomes at the upper secondary school level are as follows:
- Language Competence:
+ Be able to apply knowledge of Vietnamese and knowledge about historical, social, ideological, philosophical, and aesthetic contexts of different periods to understand more difficult texts (in terms of volume, complexity, and comprehension demands).
+ Be able to analyze and evaluate the content and distinctive features of expression in texts, especially innovative language searches, writing styles, and text types. Students should form their own views and thoughts about humans and life; recognize the role and impact of reading on themselves.
+ From grades 10 to 12: proficiently write argumentative and explanatory texts on topics related to life and career orientation; write correctly according to procedures, combining various expressive methods, styles of argumentation, and artistic elements; have a clear stance on social issues.
+ Be able to write argumentative and informational texts on relatively complex topics; argumentative texts require analysis, evaluation, comparison of the literary work's value; discuss issues suitable for near-adolescent age, requiring relatively complex structures and argumentation styles; evidence should be sourced from multiple channels; explanatory texts should address scientific issues in the form of a research report adhering to conventions; comply with intellectual property rights and avoid plagiarism.
+ Convey emotions, attitudes, personal experiences, and ideas regarding the issues posed in the text; reflect a perspective, thinking, and lifestyle with a strong personality.
+ Be able to debate issues with opposing viewpoints; have an open-minded attitude and suitable debating culture; capable of listening to presentations and evaluating content and delivery of the presentation; keen to express their opinions and personality in debates; confidently present scientific topics with persuasive power. Speak and listen flexibly; master the method and process of conducting a debate.
- Literary Competence
+ Analyze and evaluate literary texts based on knowledge of artistic styles and literary history.
Recognize the characteristics of literary imagery and some differences between literary imagery and other forms of artistic representation (painting, music, architecture, sculpture);
Analyze and evaluate the ideological content and expression methods in a literary text;
Recognize and analyze the characteristics of literary language, narrative, plot, and storytelling methods;
Recognize and analyze some artistic style features in folk, medieval, and modern literature; the artistic style of some major authors and works.
+ Summarize key points about the history of national literature (development process, major themes and topics, major authors, and works; some content and form values of national literature) and apply this to reading literary works.
+ Create some forms of literary texts that express the ability to convey emotions and ideas aesthetically through language.
What are the compulsory subjects in the high school graduation exam in Vietnam?
According to Item 5 of the Plan for organizing the examination and recognizing upper secondary school graduation from 2025, issued under Decision 4068/QD-BGDDT 2023, the compulsory subjects in the high school graduation exam from 2025 are as follows:
Test papers:
Candidates must take the compulsory paper, including Literature, Mathematics, and 02 elective papers from the remaining papers studied in grade 12 (Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Informatics, Technology).
Thus, the compulsory subjects in the high school graduation exam in Vietnam from 2025 include:
- Literature.
- Mathematics.
- 02 elective subjects from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12 (Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Informatics, Technology).
Note: The implementation schedule of the General Education Program, issued under Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT (with some contents amended by Articles 1 and 2 of Circular 13/2022/TT-BGDDT), is as follows:
- From the 2020-2021 academic year for grade 1.
