What is the grade at which students in Vietnam initially learn History?
Under Section 1 of the General Education Program in History and Geography issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the characteristics of the History subject are as follows:
History at the primary education level is a compulsory subject, taught and learned in grades 4 and 5.
The subject is developed on the basis of inherited development from the Natural and Social Sciences subjects in grades 1, 2, and 3 and forms the foundation for learning History at the secondary school level. It also contributes to laying the initial foundation for social science education at higher levels.
The subject contributes to forming and developing the core qualities and general competencies in students, as identified in the Overall Program.
The History curriculum at the primary education level includes essential basic knowledge and skills of the history of locality, region, Vietnam, neighboring countries, and fundamental aspects of world history and geography.
The content of the History curriculum also directly relates to many subjects and other educational activities such as Ethics, Vietnamese, Experiential Activities, etc.
Thus, primary school students learn History from grade 4.

According to Section 3 of the General Education Program in History and Geography issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives of the History curriculum at the primary education level in Vietnam are as follows:
History at the primary level forms and develops in students the capability of historical and geographical understanding with components:
Scientific historical understanding; exploring history and geography; applying learned knowledge and skills; contributing to forming and developing general capabilities: self-regulation and self-study, communication and cooperation, problem-solving and creativity.
History at the primary level helps students explore the natural and social world around them to nurture national pride, love for nature, homeland, and country; awareness of protecting nature, preserving and developing Vietnamese cultural values; and respecting cultural differences among nations and ethnic groups.
Thereby contributing to forming and developing the qualities of patriotism, compassion, diligence, honesty, and responsibility.
