Ly Thuong Kiet and "Nam quốc sơn hà" Poem

Ly Thuong Kiet was a renowned general during the Ly dynasty, famous for his resistance against the invading Song army. One of the most recounted stories about him is the creation of the poem "Nam quốc sơn hà" – considered the first declaration of independence of our nation.

In 1077, when the Song army invaded our country, Ly Thuong Kiet led our troops to establish a strong defensive line at the Nhu Nguyet River. To boost the morale of the soldiers, he had the poem "Nam quốc sơn hà" recited by the river. Hearing the poem, our troops were further emboldened, fought with full dedication, and achieved a glorious victory, forcing the Song army to retreat.

The story of Ly Thuong Kiet and the divine poem has become a source of national pride.

Tran Quoc Toan crushed an orange

Tran Quoc Toan was a heroic youth during the resistance against the Mongol Yuan. Although young, he early showed a spirit of patriotism and bravery.

In 1282, when King Tran Nhan Tong organized the Binh Than conference to discuss strategies against the enemy, Tran Quoc Toan, because of his young age, was not allowed to attend. Very angry, he stood outside, grinding his teeth while eavesdropping. Without realizing it, he had squeezed an orange in his hand until it was crushed. Thereafter, he decided to gather his household servants, forge weapons, and form his own army to fight against the Mongol Yuan.

Tran Quoc Toan's actions reflect intense patriotism and serve as a bright example for the younger generation to follow.

Le Loi and the tale of returning the magical sword

Le Loi was the leader of the Lam Son uprising, driving out the Ming invaders and reclaiming independence for the nation. A well-known story about him is the legend of "Le Loi returning the magical sword."

It is said that during the early days of the uprising, Le Loi was given a magical sword by the Golden Turtle to help him defeat the Ming army. After reclaiming the country, one day, while strolling on Lake Ta Vong (now Ho Guom), the Golden Turtle emerged and demanded the return of the sword. Understanding that the sword had fulfilled its mission, Le Loi returned it.

Since then, the lake has been called Ho Guom. The story reflects Le Loi's gratitude and patriotism.

Ba Trieu riding an elephant into battle

Ba Trieu is a prominent female hero in our country's history. She is known for her statement: "I want to ride the strong wind, tread the fierce waves, slash the killer whales in the East Sea, rather than bow my head to be someone's concubine!"

In the 3rd century, our country was dominated by the Wu regime. Refusing to be enslaved, Ba Trieu gathered an insurgent army, rode an elephant into battle, and defeated many enemy troops. With intelligence and courage, she instilled fear in the enemy.

Although the uprising ultimately failed, Ba Trieu's indomitable spirit remains a symbol of patriotism and the fighting spirit of our nation.

Trung Sisters' uprising

In the year 40 AD, our country was dominated by the Han dynasty. Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, known as the Trung Sisters, rose up to reclaim independence for the nation.

When Trung Trac's husband was killed by the Han army, the sisters gathered an insurgent army and rode elephants into battle. In a short time, they reclaimed 65 citadels and drove the Han army back. Trung Trac ascended the throne, ruling the country for three years.

However, the Han dynasty did not relent, sending forces to suppress them. Being outmatched, the Trung Sisters heroically sacrificed themselves on the Hat Giang River. The uprising, though it failed, left the unyielding spirit of the Trung Sisters as a point of national pride.

Nguyen Trai and the Le Chi Yuan incident

Nguyen Trai was a distinguished cultural figure, military strategist, and politician during the early Le dynasty. He played a major role in the resistance against the Ming army, helping Le Loi reclaim the nation's independence.

After peace was achieved, Nguyen Trai retired to his hometown to live in seclusion. But in 1442, King Le Thai Tong died suddenly while visiting his estate at Le Chi Yuan. The court accused Nguyen Trai of plotting regicide and ordered the execution of three generations of his family. It was not until 1464 that King Le Thanh Tong exonerated him.

Nguyen Trai left behind many immortal literary works, especially "Binh Ngo dai cao," considered the second declaration of independence for our nation.

Quang Trung's great victory over the Qing army

In 1788, as the Qing army invaded our country, King Quang Trung swiftly mobilized forces, gathering an insurgent army to march north.

In just five days, the Tay Son army crushed 290,000 Qing soldiers. The most famous battle was at Dong Da Mound, where tens of thousands of Qing soldiers were annihilated. After the monumental victory, Quang Trung entered Thang Long amid the admiration of the people.

King Quang Trung's glorious achievements safeguarded the nation's independence, etching his name in history as an outstanding hero.

Hung Dao Grand Prince Tran Quoc Tuan

Tran Quoc Tuan was a brilliant strategist and a major contributor to the resistance against the Mongol Yuan invasions.

When the enemy invaded, he led our people three times to defeat the Yuan army. He also authored the "Hich Tuong Si" to inspire patriotism among the soldiers. Under his exceptional leadership, our army defeated the enemy in significant battles such as Chuong Duong, Ham Tu, and especially the Battle of Bach Dang in 1288.

After peace was restored, Tran Quoc Tuan did not accept the throne but continued to serve the court. He is a symbol of loyalty and exceptional military intellect.

Ho Chi Minh and the journey to find a national salvation path

In the early 20th century, when our country was still under French colonial rule, young Nguyen Tat Thanh was determined to leave and find a path to save the nation.

In 1911, he departed from Saigon Port, beginning a journey across five continents. He studied various struggles of different countries and ultimately chose the proletarian revolution to liberate the nation.

After years of activism, in 1945, President Ho Chi Minh led the people in gaining control and establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. From then, our country entered a new era of independence, opening a proud chapter in history.
