Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Decision 2045/QD-BGDDT of 2024 on the framework for the academic year 2024 - 2025 for preschool education, general education, and continuous education nationwide.
Article 1 of Decision 2045/QD-BGDDT of 2024 stipulates as follows:
Issuing the framework for the academic year 2024 - 2025 applicable to preschool education, general education, and continuous education nationwide as follows:
1. The earliest school start date is one week before the commencement ceremony. For grade 1, the earliest school start date is two weeks before the commencement ceremony.
2. The commencement ceremony will be held on September 5, 2024.
3. The first semester ends before January 18, 2025, and the school year concludes before May 31, 2025.
4. Primary education program completion and lower secondary school graduation recognition are to be done before June 30, 2025.
5. Enrollment for new students at all academic levels must be completed before July 31, 2025.
6. The high school graduation exam for 2025 is tentatively scheduled for June 26 and June 27, 2025.
7. Other national examinations are organized in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training.

What aree the ages for primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary school students in Vietnam?
According to the provisions of Article 28 of the Law on Education 2019:
Grades and Ages of General Education
1. General education grades and ages are prescribed as follows:
a) Primary education is conducted over 5 school years, from grade 1 to grade 5. The age for starting grade 1 is 6 years old, calculated by year;
b) Lower secondary education is conducted over 4 school years, from grade 6 to grade 9. Students entering grade 6 must have completed primary education. The age for starting grade 6 is 11 years old, calculated by year;
c) Upper secondary education is conducted over 3 school years, from grade 10 to grade 12. Students entering grade 10 must have a lower secondary school diploma. The age for starting grade 10 is 15 years old, calculated by year.
2. Cases where students can skip grades or are older than the prescribed ages specified in Clause 1 of this Article include:
a) Students who skip grades in cases of early intellectual development;
b) Students older than the prescribed ages due to grade repetition, living in areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, being ethnic minorities, having disabilities, being physically or intellectually underdeveloped, orphans, belonging to poor households, returning from abroad, and other cases as prescribed by law.
3. General education is divided into the basic education phase and the career-oriented education phase. The basic education phase includes primary education and lower secondary education; the career-oriented education phase is upper secondary education. Students in vocational education institutions can study upper secondary education cultural knowledge.
4. The Minister of Education and Training stipulates the teaching and learning of Vietnamese for ethnic minority children before they enter grade 1; the teaching of upper secondary education cultural knowledge in vocational education institutions; cases specified in Clause 2 of this Article.
Thus, according to the Law on Education 2019, the usual ages for students at different levels are:
- Primary level: 6-10 years old;
- Lower secondary level: 11-14 years old;
- Upper secondary level: 15-17 years old.
