Based on Section 1 of the General Education Program for the Literature subject issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the characteristics of the Literature subject in the General Education Program are as follows:
Literature is a subject in the field of Language and Literature Education, taught from grade 1 to grade 12. In primary schools, this subject is called Vietnamese; in lower secondary schools and upper secondary schools, it is called Literature.
Literature is a subject with instrumental and aesthetic-human values; it helps students have a means of communication and serves as a foundation to study all other subjects and educational activities in school; it is also an important tool to educate students on high values of culture, literature, and national language; it helps develop in students healthy emotions, humanitarian feelings, compassionate and altruistic lifestyles, etc.
Through linguistic texts and vivid artistic images in literary works, by activities of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, the Literature subject plays a significant role in helping students form and develop good qualities and essential core competencies for living and working effectively, and for lifelong learning.
The content of the Literature subject is comprehensive, including cultural, ethical, philosophical knowledge, etc., related to many other subjects and educational activities such as History, Geography, Arts, Civic Education, Foreign Languages, Natural and Social Sciences, Experiential Activities, Vocational Guidance, etc.
Literature is closely related to life; it helps students care more about, connect more with everyday life, know how to relate and have skills to solve arising problems in reality.
The core content of the subject includes basic, essential knowledge and skills about the Vietnamese language and literature, meeting the required competencies and qualities of students at each education level; it is divided into two phases: the basic education phase and the career-oriented education phase.
Basic education phase: The program is designed with main segments corresponding to skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Vietnamese language and literature knowledge are integrated in the process of teaching reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Selected texts are arranged to match the reception capacity of students at each education level. The goal of this phase is to help students use Vietnamese fluently for effective communication in life and study other subjects and educational activities well; form and develop literary competency, an expression of aesthetic competency; at the same time, foster thoughts and feelings for the development of students' souls and personalities.
Career-oriented education phase: The program consolidates and develops the results of the basic education phase, helping students enhance language and literary competencies, especially receiving literary texts; strengthen skills in creating argumentative texts and informative texts with more complex content and writing techniques; equip with some knowledge of literary history and literary theory beneficial for reading and writing about literature; continue to foster thoughts, feelings, souls, and personalities for students to become responsible citizens.
Additionally, each year, students oriented towards social sciences and humanities can choose to study some specialized topics.
These topics aim to enhance knowledge about literature and language, skills in applying knowledge into practice, meeting the preferences, needs, and career orientation of students.
