What are the viewpoints on developing the Literature program in Vietnam?

According to the General Education Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:

- The Literature program complies with the basic regulations stated in the overall program while emphasizing several viewpoints:

- The program is developed on theoretical and practical foundations, updated with research achievements in pedagogy, psychology, and methods of teaching Literature; research achievements in literature and linguistics; achievements of Vietnamese literature through different periods; experience in building the Literature program in Vietnam, especially from the early 11th century to now, and international trends in program development in general and Literature programs in particular in recent years, especially the programs of developed countries; social and educational realities, economic conditions, and Vietnamese cultural traditions, especially the diversity of students in terms of regions, conditions, and learning capabilities.

- The program focuses on training communication skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) throughout all three educational levels to meet the competency-oriented program requirements and ensure continuity and consistency across all educational levels and classes. Basic and foundational knowledge of Vietnamese language and literature is formed through teaching activities of receiving and creating texts, directly serving the requirement of training skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

- The program is developed in an open direction, reflected in not detailing the teaching content but only stipulating the requirements needed for reading, writing, speaking, and listening for each class; stipulating some basic, core knowledge about Vietnamese, literature, and some texts that hold important positions and significance in national literature as mandatory content for students nationwide.

- The program not only meets renewal requirements but also focuses on inheriting and promoting the advantages of existing Literature programs, especially the current program.

What are the specific competencies required for the Literature subject at the upper secondary level in Vietnam?​

According to the General Education Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the specific regulations on literary competencies are as follows:

Analyze and evaluate literary texts based on an understanding of artistic styles and literary history; recognize the characteristics of literary imagery and some differences between literary imagery and other forms of artistic imagery (painting, music, architecture, sculpture); analyze and evaluate the ideological content and expression of ideologies in a literary text; recognize and analyze the features of literary language, story, plot, and storytelling methods; recognize and analyze some artistic style features in folk, medieval, and modern literature; artistic styles of some major authors and works.

Provide an overview of the history of national literature (development process, major themes and topics, significant authors and works; some content and form values of national literature) and apply it to reading literary works.

Create some types of literary texts that demonstrate the ability to express emotions and ideas through aesthetic language.
