Sample 1 "Mother" by Do Trung Lai is a work that evokes many emotions for the reader. The poem is the voice of a child expressing sorrow and compassion upon seeing their mother aging. Her life has been filled with hardships and struggles. The author uses the image of an areca tree to talk about the mother. The contrast between the mother and the areca: "Mother's back is hunched - Areca is still straight" and "Areca - fresh green top, Mother - gray hair," "Areca close to the sky - Mother close to the earth" creates a haunting echo in the heart filled with distress. Particularly, the image "A dried areca piece - Dry and frail like mother" highlights the aging and withering of the mother. This makes the "child lifting in hands - Unable to hold tears." The words "lifting" and "holding" both indicate emotional actions. While "lifting" conveys respect, "holding" suppresses bitterness. Each pair of expressions accompanies to create abundant substance, with few words but far-reaching impact. This emotional movement leads the lyrical character to question at the end: "Why ask the sky - Why does my mother age?". The rhetorical question receives no answer, leaving a sense of loneliness and emptiness. No one can answer why the mother ages, nor can anyone stop the ruthless passage of time. The image "clouds drift afar" is akin to the mother’s gray hair merging with the white clouds above, reflecting a sense of sadness and regret. The poem is truly moving, revealing the pain and compassion of a child witnessing their mother's aging over the years. |
