Literature at the primary education level (grades 1 - 5) is called Vietnamese language.
Under Section 3 of the General Education Program for Literature issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the Literature curriculum has the following general objectives:
- To form and develop key qualities for students: patriotism, kindness, diligence, honesty, and responsibility; to nourish the soul, shape personality, and develop individuality.
To help students explore themselves and the world around, understand people, have a rich spiritual life, and have humanitarian views and conduct; to foster a love for the Vietnamese language and literature; to have a sense of the origin and cultural identity of the nation, contributing to preserving and developing Vietnamese cultural values; to have a spirit of absorbing human cultural essences and the ability to integrate internationally.
- To help students develop general competencies: self-control and self-learning ability, communication and cooperation skills, problem-solving and creativity skills.
Particularly, the Literature (Vietnamese language) subject helps students develop language and literary competencies: honing the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening; having a foundational system of general knowledge about Vietnamese and literature, developing imaginative and logical thinking, contributing to forming the basic education of a cultured person; knowing how to create common texts; knowing how to receive and evaluate literary texts specifically, and communication products and aesthetic values in general in life.
Therefore, 5th-grade Vietnamese language in particular, and Literature in general will help students explore themselves and the world around them.

What is the periodic assessment duration for 5th-grade students in the Vietnamese language subject?
Under Section 8 of the General Education Program for Literature issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the duration of the Literature curriculum at different educational levels is as follows:
[1] Duration by grade (per number of lessons)
Grade 1 | Grade 2 | Grade 3 | Grade 4 | 5th-grade | Grade 6 | Grade 7 | Grade 8 | Grade 9 | Grade 10 | Grade 11 | Grade 12 |
420 | 350 | 245 | 245 | 245 | 140 | 140 | 140 | 140 | 105 | 105 | 105 |
At the upper secondary education level, each grade has an additional 35 hours for selected adecamic topics.
[2] Duration dedicated to educational content
The duration dedicated to educational content is actively arranged by textbook authors and teachers based on the required achievements at each grade and actual teaching conditions. However, it is necessary to ensure a reasonable balance between the following components:
- Between knowledge acquisition and skill practice (with a focus on practical skill development and application).
- Between types and genres of texts for reading, writing, speaking, and listening (allocating more time for reading literary texts).
- Between skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening (allocating more time for practicing reading skills); specifically, the proportional duration dedicated to each skill at each grade level is as follows:
Grade Group | Reading | Writing | Speaking and Listening | Periodic Assessment |
Grades 1 to 3 | about 60% | about 25% | about 10% | about 5% |
Grades 4 and 5 | about 63% | about 22% | about 10% | about 5% |
Grades 6 to 9 | about 63% | about 22% | about 10% | about 5% |
Grades 10 to 12 | about 60% | about 25% | about 10% | about 5% |
Therefore, the periodic assessment duration for 5th-grade students studying Vietnamese is about 5%.
