Under Clause III of the General Education Program in Literature promulgated with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the common objectives of the General Education Program for Literature in Vietnam are stipulated as follows:

- The General Education Program for Literature forms and develops essential qualities in students: patriotism, kindness, diligence, honesty, and responsibility; nurtures the soul, develops character, and cultivates individuality.

- The Literature helps students explore themselves and the world around them, understand people, have a rich spiritual life, and develop a humane perspective and behavior; foster a love for the Vietnamese language and literature; have awareness of the nation's roots and identity, and contribute to preserving and developing Vietnamese cultural values; have the spirit to absorb the world's cultural quintessence and the ability to integrate internationally.

- The General Education Program for Literature contributes to helping students develop general competencies: autonomy and self-study ability, communication and cooperation ability, problem-solving and creativity.

- The Literature helps students develop both language and literary competence: practice skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening; have foundational general knowledge about Vietnamese and literature, develop figurative and logical thinking, contributing to forming the basic knowledge of a cultured person; know how to create common documents; know how to receive and evaluate literary works in particular, communicative products, and aesthetic values in general in life.
