1. Overview of the Republic of South Africa today The Republic of South Africa is one of the most unique countries in Africa, renowned for its cultural diversity and rich history. With an area of 1,221,037 km², South Africa is the 24th largest country in the world. As of 2025, the population of South Africa is estimated to be around 60 million people, with 11 official languages, among which English, Zulu, and Afrikaans are the most common. South Africa is also known for its unique system of three capitals: Pretoria as the administrative capital, Cape Town as the legislative capital, and Bloemfontein as the judicial capital. April 27 is celebrated annually as Freedom Day, marking the complete collapse of the Apacthai policies and the beginning of a multiracial democratic era. 2. Formation and collapse of the Apacthai policies Causes - The Apacthai regime emerged as a consequence of the colonization process brought about by Europeans. Since the late 19th century, white people had taken control of all economic, political, and social spheres, while black people were considered a lowly class. - The supremacy of white people was legalized by laws such as the Population Registration Act, the Group Areas Act, and the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act. These laws not only suppressed the rights of white people but also maintained the exploitation of black labor. Development - The Apacthai regime was established through repressive laws, existing as a system of black oppression. Harsh laws divided boundaries between white people and other racial groups, impeding marriage, labor rights, and educational access. - Protests against this regime increased, with the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960 becoming a painful lesson and a catalyst for the anti-Apacthai movement. Despite mounting international pressure, the laws were maintained. - In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released and became a symbol of the fight against Apacthai. Formal negotiations began, leading to multiracial democratic elections in 1994. Results - The Apacthai regime officially collapsed, bringing about peace agreements and democracy. The success of the elections established the first government with Nelson Mandela as President, affirming the first role of a multiracial nation. - Although Apacthai was abolished, the cultural legacy of discrimination continued to affect many decades thereafter. Significance - The collapse of the Apacthai regime was not only a great victory for the people of South Africa but also a global symbol of triumph over injustice and discrimination. It demonstrates that unity and justice always prevail over oppression. - With this success, South Africa became a flag bearer of the anti-racial discrimination movement, contributing to the elimination of inequities globally. |
