What are the objectives of Informatics at the primary level in Vietnam?

According to sub-section 2, section 3, of the General Education Program for Informatics issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives of Informatics at the primary level in Vietnam are:

- Assisting students in  initially familiarizing themselves with digital technology, beginning to form computational skills, and preparing them for continued Informatics studies at the lower secondary level;

- Initially forming in students problem-solving thinking with the assistance of computers: Developing the need to gather and use information and ideas to control computers through creating simple programs using a visual programming language;

- Assisting students in using software to create simple digital products such as a short document, greeting cards, fun animations, etc.

- Assisting students in initially becoming familiar with digital technology through using computers for entertainment, learning, viewing, and searching for information on the internet; training students in basic computer usage skills; knowing how to protect their health when using computers, initially having an awareness of avoiding the harms of internet usage and respecting copyright.

What are the perspectives on developing the Informatics curriculum in Vietnam?

According to section 2 of the General Education Program for Informatics issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the perspectives on developing the Informatics curriculum in Vietnam are:

(1) Inheritance and Development

- Inheriting the current Informatics curriculum

The Informatics curriculum inherits and develops the fundamental advantages of the current program, which are systematic and scientific, while avoiding a skew towards theory in some content and redundancy between educational levels, causing overload.

- Leveraging the Informatics curriculum of developed countries

In the context of many countries emphasizing the development of Informatics education programs to prepare human resources for the fourth industrial revolution, the Informatics curriculum leverages and selectively applies the Informatics curriculum of advanced countries for integration, aiming towards international standards.

(2) Scientific, Modern, and Pedagogical Nature

The Informatics curriculum selects the basic, general, and modern content of the three strands of knowledge DL, ICT, CS, while adequately covering ethics, law, culture, and the impact of informatics on society, ensuring the principle of “teaching academics and teaching morals” and appreciating humanity in an era of high connectivity between the real and digital worlds.

The program is designed with pedagogical principles: ensuring appropriateness, developing knowledge strands linearly and concentrically, building a system of core concepts.

The curriculum selects content and requirements suitable for the age, intertwining theoretical and practical content, abstract and intuitive concepts.

Large themes run throughout educational levels with progressively higher requirements. Core concepts begin forming at the primary level and develop fully at higher educational levels.

(3) Practical Nature

- Serving career orientation

In the context of the fourth industrial revolution with the emergence of many new industries and jobs requiring specialized informatics knowledge and skills, the Informatics curriculum reflects the broad connectivity and widespread influence of informatics across different fields of life, establishing a wide spectrum of specialized industries and informatics application occupations for different student groups.

- Implementing STEM education

The orientation towards STEM education is being implemented as an important direction in education and training in many countries worldwide.

As a foundational technology that encompasses all four elements of STEM education (Science (S), Technology (T), Engineering (E), and Mathematics (M)), Informatics plays a central role in connecting other subjects, promoting STEM education, and fostering student creativity to produce digital products with high ICT content.

The Informatics curriculum leverages the advantage of interdisciplinary integration by requiring students to create digital products both individually and in groups to bridge the gap between academic education and practice.

(4) Openness

- Open program content

The Informatics curriculum has mandatory themes as well as optional themes. Content themes are not dependent on specific hardware and software, do not distinguish between open or closed software and materials, creating convenience for application suitable to the capabilities of different localities and students.

Due to its unique nature, the Informatics curriculum needs to be updated and adjusted periodically according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training to ensure modernity and timeliness, responding to the rapid development of digital technology, and fitting the socio-economic conditions of the country.

- Diverse educational forms

The Informatics curriculum selects practical and attractive themes, creating conditions for students to study and apply informatics not only within the scope of the Informatics subject but also in other subjects, not only within the school's premises but also in environments outside the school premises (at home, via computer networks, in clubs, and in reality).
