Process of teaching phonics and reading for 1st-grade students

I. Lesson Preparation

Identifying objectives:

It is necessary to clearly define the objectives of the lesson, specifically:

Helping students recognize and correctly pronounce the phonetic sounds and tones in the lesson.

Assisting students in blending tones and reading words and sentences in the reading exercise.

Developing the ability to understand the content of the reading exercise.

Tools and teaching materials:

Alphabet board, illustrative images, textbooks, set of letter cards, personal chalkboard.

Illustrative images and videos (if available).

Check students' preparation:

Check if students have firmly grasped the previously learned phonetic sounds and tones.

Confirm students' preparation for the lesson.

II. Teaching Phonics (Part 1)

Introducing new phonics sounds:

Pronounce the sound: The teacher pronounces the new sound clearly and slowly, possibly with gestures (if applicable).

Offer illustrative examples: The teacher can use familiar vocabulary to illustrate the new sound.

Example: When teaching the sound "ai," the teacher can say: "Look at the board, here is the sound 'ai,' listen: ai. Now I will read some words with the sound 'ai' such as 'mai', 'cải', 'lai.'"

Reading Phonics:

The teacher reads the sample once, then has students read along each sound, word, and sentence containing the new sound.

Practicing pronunciation of the sound:

Have students read the new sound in groups, pairs, or individually to ensure correct pronunciation.

The teacher corrects pronunciation errors (if any) and instructs on correct pronunciation.

Practicing writing the sound:

Guide students to write the new sound on personal boards or exercise notebooks.

Pay attention to the correct sitting posture and neat writing.

III. Teaching Reading (Part 2)

Introducing the reading passage:

Read the entire passage model to familiarize students with pronunciation and sentence stress.

Introduce the topic of the reading passage, new vocabulary, and illustrative images (if any).

Practicing reading each sentence, word:

The teacher has students read each sentence in the passage, explains difficult words, helps them understand the meaning of words and sentences.

Re-read difficult sentences for students to follow.

Practicing reading the whole passage:

Have students read the whole passage slowly and clearly.

Divide the class into groups for choral reading or according to groups.

Checking students' reading ability:

The teacher checks students' reading ability, asks them to re-read the passage.

Correct pronunciation errors (if any) and help students gain confidence in reading.

IV. Developing comprehension skills

Ask questions for students to understand the passage:

The teacher may ask questions about the reading content to deepen students’ understanding of the story or scenario in the passage.

Encourage students to answer questions by describing or recounting the content.

Encourage students to re-express the content:

The teacher may ask students to recount the story in their own words or describe the images in the passage.

V. Summarization and practice

Review the lesson:

Summarize the phonetic sounds, words, and sentences learned in the lesson.

Practice difficult sounds and words to ensure students grasp them firmly.

Consolidate the lesson:

Have students practice reading additional sentences with the sounds learned.

The teacher may assign homework to reinforce the sounds and words learned.

Commend students:

Praise students who read well and show progress, encourage them to continue their efforts.

VI. Evaluate learning outcomes

Evaluate pronunciation ability: Check if students can accurately pronounce the sounds and words.

Evaluate reading ability: Check if students read at the correct pace, pause appropriately, and comprehend the lesson's content.

Comments: The teacher comments on each student's progress and provides specific guidance if improvements are needed.

General notes:

The process of teaching phonics and reading needs to be flexible, depending on the students' characteristics in the class.

Always create a joyful and relaxed atmosphere so that students do not feel stressed when learning to read and write.

Teaching activities should be combined with games and illustrative images for better student comprehension.
