The purpose of teaching speaking and listening is to help students express themselves clearly and confidently in spoken language; to understand correctly; to know how to respect both speakers and listeners; to have appropriate attitudes during exchanges and discussions. Teaching speaking and listening not only develops communication skills but also educates students' qualities and morality.
In teaching speaking, teachers guide students to observe and analyze samples, simultaneously instruct on how to perform and organize for students to practice; guide the preparation process for a presentation and how to deliver it to a group, team, or class; guide on how to prepare for a discussion, debate, and how to participate.
In teaching listening, teachers guide students to grasp the content of what they hear, understand and evaluate the speaker's viewpoints and intentions; how to check unclear information; to listen actively and respect the speaker, and respect diverse opinions; and how to cooperate and solve problems with a positive attitude.
For interactive speaking and listening skills, teachers instruct students to know how to listen and ask questions to understand what they hear, to speak according to turns in conversation, and to use other audio-visual aids to support their spoken presentation.
Practicing speaking and listening is the main activity aimed at training students in these skills.
To facilitate all students in practicing speaking, teachers should be flexible in organizing learning activities, such as having pairs of students talk to each other or having students present their spoken work to the group, class; organizing discussions, debates, to understand the interactive nature of spoken language and develop positive, cooperative attitudes when exchanging, discussing, and problem-solving through discussion; formulating groups, listening to feedback, and gaining experience based on specific guidance on evaluation criteria provided by the teacher.
