Preparing for "Tay Tien" lesson

1. Author Quang Dung

Quang Dung, whose birth name is Bui Dinh Diem, was born in Phuong Tri village, Dan Phuong district, Ha Tay (currently, Dan Phuong district, Hanoi capital). He was born in 1921 and passed away on October 13, 1988.

In 1947, he was sent by the agency to study at the Military Intermediate School in Son Tay. Sometime later, the poet Quang Dung participated in the second phase of the Tay Tien campaign.

2. Structure

The work "Tay Tien" is divided into 4 parts:

- Part 1 (First 14 lines): Talks about the arduous marches of the revolutionary soldiers and the scenery where the soldiers marched.

- Part 2 (Next 8 lines): This section talks about the memories of the revolutionary soldiers.

- Part 3 (Following up to "khuc doc hanh"): This part expresses the author's longing for his comrades.

- Part 4: The remaining part is an oath of loyalty to Tay Tien.

3. Summary of the content of Tay Tien

Through the poem "Tay Tien," the author Quang Dung expresses his nostalgia and pride for his dear comrades, the elegant and brave soldiers with a strong sense of patriotism in the Tay Tien brigade who fought and sacrificed for the Fatherland. In the author's deep nostalgia, the Tay Tien army appears in arduous marches with the poetic, majestic, and fierce nature of the western region.

4. Content value

Quang Dung portrayed the image of the Tay Tien soldiers with glorious beauty that is also full of romance and elegance, along with the majestic and poetic nature of the Northwest. Before the majestic landscapes of the country, the image of these Tay Tien soldiers emerged as an immortal monument, embodying both grandeur and heroism.

The poem "Tay Tien" vividly depicts the harshness of war and the hardships that soldiers endured in the resistance. Despite the difficulties, they lived optimistically and fought bravely.

5. Artistic value

Through the romantic and tragic writing style, Quang Dung helped readers vividly picture the majestic and poetic nature of the Northwest and the robust and strong soldiers.

The distinctive use of language with location names, figurative words, and Sino-Vietnamese words evokes the life of soldiers, creating realism and specificity while remaining dynamic and engaging.

The poem’s tone shifts strongly according to the emotional flow: sometimes deeply passionate with nostalgia, sometimes reflective in poignant memories, and at other times solemn and heroic associated with the images of comrades fighting and sacrificing together.
