Are the results of the Exam for the Selection of Excellent Upper Secondary School Students at the National Level in the 2024-2025 academic year in Vietnam available?
The Exam for the Selection of Excellent Upper Secondary School Students at the National Level in the 2024-2025 academic year was conducted on December 25 and 26, 2024. A total of 6,482 candidates participated in the exam, an increase of 663 candidates compared to the 2023-2024 academic year.
Candidates took the exam at 68 examination councils with 13 subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, English, Russian, French, Chinese, and Japanese. This year, Japanese was introduced as a subject for the first time.
According to the current regulations for the national excellence selection exam, the total number of awards from Encouragement upward does not exceed 60% of the total number of candidates; the total number of First, Second, and Third prizes does not exceed 60% of the total number of awards; and the number of First prizes does not exceed 5% of the total awards.
The grading process was organized by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in accordance with the regulations, ensuring safety, seriousness, accuracy, objectivity, and fairness. As a result, the Examination Council selected 3,803 candidates who won awards, accounting for 58.68% of the total number of candidates. In the academic year 2023-2024, there were 5,812 candidates, with 3,351 candidates winning awards.
The grading results and award placements show that the number of students achieving awards this year is spread across most localities. Some mountainous and border regions, with challenging socio-economic conditions, also had students achieving the highest rankings in the exam.
According to the regulations, within 15 days from the announcement of the results, candidates have the right to request a re-assessment of their exams. The Quality Management Department, MOET, issues certificates to the award-winning students, while other students receive certificates acknowledging their participation in the exam.
According to the plan, in March 2025, MOET will organize the selection exam for high school students for the national teams to compete in regional and international Olympiads in 2025 for subjects Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Informatics.

What are the notable new points of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations from 2025 in Vietnam?
The Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT will be applicable for the High School Graduation Exam starting from 2025 with notable new points as follows:
(1) Conducting the High School Graduation Exam 2025 in 03 exam sessions with 04 exam subjects
Under Article 3 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 15/2020/TT-BGDDT, amended by Clause 1, Article 1 Circular 02/2024/TT-BGDDT:
Papers
The exam consists of 5 papers, including: 3 independent papers are Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language (English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese and Korean); 1 paper of natural science (a combination of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology); 1 paper of social science (a combination of History, Geography, and Civic Education) with respect to students of compulsory education program at high school level or the papers of History and Geography with respect to students of continuing education program at high school level.
Under Article 3 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT:
Papers
Conducting the exam consisting of 03 sessions: 01 session for the Literature paper, 01 session for the Mathematics paper, and 01 session for the elective paper comprising 02 subjects among Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economics and Law Education, Informatics, Industry-oriented Technology (abbreviated as Industrial Technology), Agriculture-oriented Technology (abbreviated as Agricultural Technology), Foreign Languages (English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Korean).
Under Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, the High School Graduation Exam Regulations from 2025 have changed from organizing 5 papers to 03 sessions, including:
- 01 session for the Literature paper,
- 01 session for the Mathematics paper, and
- 01 session for the elective paper comprising 02 subjects among Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economics and Law Education, Informatics, Industry-oriented Technology (abbreviated as Industrial Technology), Agriculture-oriented Technology (abbreviated as Agricultural Technology), Foreign Languages (English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Korean)
Thus, the High School Graduation Exam 2025 is organized into 03 sessions with 04 exam subjects, reducing 01 session and 02 exam subjects compared to 2024.
(2) Candidates who have graduated from upper secondary education can choose to take papers in the High School Graduation Exam 2025 based on the 'Old Program' or 'New Program'
Under Article 2 of Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, the provisions are as follows:
Transitional Provisions
1. For candidates who have completed the general education program before 2025 but have not graduated from upper secondary education, they will take exams based on the question papers of the Education Program issued together with Decision No. 16/2006/QD-BGDDT dated May 5, 2006, the Continuing Education Program issued together with Decision No. 50/2006/QD-BGDDT dated November 7, 2006, and the guidance documents for adjusting teaching content of the Ministry of Education and Training.
2. For candidates who have a high school diploma and/or an intermediate diploma who wish to take the High School Graduation Exam 2025 to form the basis for enrollment registration, they are permitted to choose to take the question papers specified in Clause 1 of this Article or the question papers as prescribed in Clause 2, Article 4 of the Regulations issued together with this Circular.
3. From 2026, the Ministry of Education and Training will organize the high school graduation exam with a single examination paper type as prescribed in Clause 2, Article 4 of the Exam Regulations.
As per the above provisions, it can be understood that:
- Candidates who have completed the general education program before 2025 but have not graduated from upper secondary education may take the exam based on the Old Program.
- Candidates who have a high school diploma and/or an intermediate diploma wishing to take the High School Graduation Exam 2025 to support their enrollment application can choose to take the exam based on the Old Program or the New Program (2018 Education Program).
- From 2026, all candidates for the high school graduation exam 2026 will take a single question paper exclusively following the New Program (2018 Education Program).
(3) Foreign candidates are allowed to use a Vietnamese language proficiency certificate to be exempt from the Literature paper for high school graduation recognition in 2025
Under Clause 3, Article 39 of the High School Graduation Exam regulations from 2025 issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, the provisions are as follows:
Exemption from taking papers in the High School Graduation Exam

3. Exemption from the Literature paper in high school graduation recognition:
Foreign nationals with a Vietnamese language proficiency certificate according to the Vietnamese proficiency framework for foreigners (achieving level 3 or higher) are exempt from the Literature paper for high school graduation recognition. Those who qualify for exemption from the Literature paper but still wish to take the Literature paper must use the results to calculate high school graduation recognition.
The Ministry of Education and Training allows foreign candidates to use a Vietnamese language proficiency certificate to be exempt from the Literature paper for high school graduation recognition in 2025.
For those who have the criteria for exemption but wish to take the Literature paper during the graduation exam, the results of the Literature paper must be used to calculate the high school graduation recognition score for 2025.
(4) Bonus points for vocational certificates of all candidates; points bonus for intermediate diplomas of Continuing Education candidates are removed.
Under Article 43 of the High School Graduation Exam regulations from 2025 issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, the provisions stipulate:
Bonus Points
Learners who participate in the following competitions and activities during high school education receive bonus points for high school graduation recognition:
1. Winning individual awards in the national excellence selection contest: Winning first, second, or third places in the national contest or first place at the provincial level gains 2.0 points; encouragement award in the national contest or second place at the provincial level gains 1.5 points; third place at the provincial level gains 1.0 point;
2. Winning individual and team awards in contests for physical scientific experiments in Physics, Chemistry, Biology; cultural contests; physical education and sports; national defense education sports; scientific and technical contests; international letter writing do ngành Giáo dục cooperate with related technical industries organize from the provincial level upwards.
a) For individual awards: winning first, second, or third places in the national or first place at the provincial level or a Gold Medal gains 2.0 points; encouragement award nationally or fourth in a national scientific and technical contest or second place provincially or a Silver Medal gains 1.5 points; third place provincially or a Bronze Medal gains 1.0 point;
b) For team awards: Bonus points are applied only for national awards; the number of players, athletes, and performers in team competitions follows the specific regulations set by each organizing committee; bonus points granted for team achievements are applied as for individual awards specified in this point.
3. Learners winning multiple awards in different contests/examinations receive bonus points only equivalent to the highest award received.
All candidates taking the High School Graduation Exam 2025 will no longer receive bonus points for vocational certificates and the remaining bonus points for intermediate diplomas will also be removed for candidates under the Continuing Education system.
What are the regulations on high school graduation recognition in Vietnam?
Under Article 45 of the High School Graduation Exam regulations from 2025 issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, high school graduation recognition is regulated as follows:
- Candidates eligible for the exam, not disciplined with exam result cancellation, achieving over 1.0 points for each exam subject on a 10-point scale, and having a graduation assessment score of at least 5.0 points will be recognized for high school graduation.
- Candidates eligible for the exam and exempt from all exam subjects for high school graduation recognition will respectively be recognized for high school graduation.
