- Basic education stage (from grades 1 to 9): Music is a compulsory subject. The content includes knowledge and skills in singing, playing musical instruments, listening to music, music reading, music theory, and music appreciation. In this stage, music education helps students experience, explore, and express themselves through musical activities, aiming to develop aesthetic competency, recognize the diversity of the musical world, and the relationship between music, culture, history, and other art forms; simultaneously raising awareness to protect and promote traditional music values. The teaching duration for each grade is 35 lessons per academic year.
- Career-oriented education stage (from grades 10 to 12): Music is an elective subject based on interests and career orientation. The core content includes expanded and advanced knowledge and skills in singing and chorale, playing four musical instruments, listening to music, music reading, music theory, and music appreciation. The program's objective is to help students perfect practical skills, expand their understanding of music in relation to cultural, historical, and social factors; raise awareness, appreciate, protect, and promote traditional music values; apply knowledge to life, meet personal preferences, and approach careers related to music. The teaching duration for each grade is 70 lessons per academic year. Additionally, students can choose study topics with a duration of 35 lessons per academic year.
Music is a compulsory subject from grades 1 to 9. From grades 10 to 12, it is an elective subject.

According to the General Education Program for Music issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the perspectives on developing the Music curriculum in Vietnam are as follows:
- Comply with the basic regulations stated in the overall General Education Program, including general orientations for all subjects (perspective, objectives, requirements, educational plan, and orientations on educational content, teaching methods, and assessment of educational outcomes, conditions for implementation, and program development); orientation for developing the Music curriculum at three educational levels.
