What Are the objectives of Mathematics education in primary schools in Vietnam?
According to sub-section 2, Section 3 of the Mathematics General Education Program issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives for primary school students in mathematics are as follows:
- Contribute to forming and developing mathematical competence with required achievements: perform simple thinking operations; pose and answer questions when reasoning and solving simple problems; select calculations and arithmetic formulas to present and articulate (spoken or written) concepts, ideas, and problem-solving methods; use mathematical language combined with natural language and body gestures to express mathematical content in simple situations; use simple tools and devices for math learning to accomplish simple learning tasks.
- Have basic, essential initial mathematics knowledge and skills about:
+ Numbers and calculations: Natural numbers, fractions, decimals, and arithmetic operations with those number sets.
+ Geometry and Measurement: Observe, identify, and describe shapes and characteristics (at a visual level) of some practical plane and solid figures; establish some simple geometric models; compute some geometric quantities; develop spatial imagination; solve some practical problems related to Geometry and Measurement (with common measurement units).
+ Statistics and Probability: Some simple statistical and probability elements; solve some practical problems related to these statistical and probability elements.
- Along with other subjects and educational activities such as Ethics, Nature and Society, Experiential Activities,... contribute to providing students with initial understanding of several occupations in society.
