The Exam for the Selection of Excellent Upper Secondary School Students at the National Level in the 2024-2025 academic year was held on December 25 and 26, 2024. There are 6,482 candidates nationwide, increasing by 663 compared to the 2023-2024 academic year.

Candidates competed at 68 examination councils with 13 subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, English, Russian, French, Chinese, and Japanese. This year, Japanese was included as an exam subject for the first time.

According to the current regulations for the Exam for the Selection of Excellent Students at the National Level, the total number of prizes, from Consolation to above, shall not exceed 60% of the candidates; specifically, the total number of First, Second, and Third prizes shall not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes, and the number of First prizes shall not exceed 5% of the total number of prizes.

The Ministry of Education and Training stated that the marking process was organized in accordance with regulations, ensuring safety, seriousness, accuracy, objectivity, and fairness. As a result, the Examination Council selected 3,803 candidates achieving prizes, accounting for 58.68% of total candidates. In the 2023-2024 academic year, there are 5,812 candidates with 3,351 candidates achieving prizes.

The exam results and prize assignments indicate that the number of students achieving prizes this year is distributed across nearly all regions. Even in some mountainous, border areas with challenging socio-economic conditions, students achieved the highest ranks in the exam.

According to exam regulations, within 15 days from the date results are announced, candidates may apply for re-marking. The Quality Management Department under the Ministry of Education and Training issues certificates to candidates achieving prizes while other candidates receive a certificate of participation.

According to plans, in March 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training will organize the Exam for the Selection of Excellent Upper Secondary School Students at the National Level for teams to compete in regional and international Olympics in 2025 for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Informatics.

Are candidates achieving third prizes in the Exam for the Selection of Excellent Students at the National Level in Vietnam eligible for direct admission to undergraduate programs?

Under point a, clause 2, Article 8 of the Regulations on enrollment for full-time undergraduate and college programs in Early Childhood Education issued with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT:

Candidates eligible for direct admission and priority admission

1. Labor Heroes, Heroes of the People's Armed Forces, and National Emulation Soldiers are admitted directly to majors, programs as prescribed by the training institution.

2. Contestants achieving high results in national or international exams, competitions, or tournaments organized or selected to participate by MOET, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism are eligible for direct admission in the year they graduate from upper secondary education (or intermediate graduation) into majors suitable for the exam subject, topic content or profession in the competition:

a) Contestants achieving First, Second, or Third prizes in the national, international exams for the selection of excellent students or in national, international science, and technology exams organized or selected to participate by MOET; the time of achieving prizes does not exceed 3 years from the time of direct admission;

b) Contestants achieving official prizes in international art competitions in singing, dancing, music, fine arts recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism; the time of achieving prizes does not exceed 4 years from the time of direct admission;

c) Contestants participating in national teams competing in official international competitions confirmed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as having completed their tasks, including: World Championships, World Cups, Olympic Games, Asian Games (ASIAD), Asian Championships, Asian Cups, Southeast Asian Championships, Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), Southeast Asian Cups; the time of achieving prizes does not exceed 4 years from the time of direct admission;

d) Contestants achieving First, Second, or Third prizes in ASEAN regional skills competitions and international skills competitions sent by the Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs; the time of achieving prizes does not exceed 3 years from the time of direct admission.

Thus, candidates achieving third prizes in the Exam for the Selection of Excellent Students at the National Level in Vietnam are eligible for direct admission to undergraduate programs suitable for the exam subject.

Who is eligible to take the Exam for the Selection of Excellent Students at the National Level in Vietnam?

According to Article 4 of the Regulations on the Exam for the Selection of Excellent Students at the National Level issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT:

- Regarding the exam for the selection of excellent students at the national level:

+ High school students whose training (or conduct) and study performance are classified as "Good" or above according to their results at the end of the semester (or academic year) adjacent to the exam and are selected for the team of the participating unit;

+ Each candidate may only participate in one exam subject in an academic year.

- Regarding the exam for the selection of Olympic teams:

Regulations on candidates:

+ High school students selected by the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam among the students that achieve prizes in the exam for the selection of excellent students at the national level in the same academic year on the principle of high to low based on test scores, ensuring that the number of students selected for each exam subject does not exceed 8 times the number of students required for the national team participating in the International Olympic Competition for such an exam subject;

+ High school students not participating in the exam for the selection of excellent students at the national level in the same academic year but are already members of the national team participating in the Regional Olympic Competition or members of the national team participating in the International Olympic Competition of the preceding academic year.
