What is the Vietnamese knowledge for grade 1 students in Vietnam?

Based on Subsection 2 of Section 5 of the General Education Program for Literature issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDĐT, the Vietnamese language knowledge for grade 1 students includes:

- Phonetics, syllables, tones; letters and tonal marks

- Spelling rules to distinguish: c and k, g and gh, ng and ngh

- Capitalization rules: capitalize the first letter of a sentence, capitalize proper names

- Vocabulary by topic: Words indicating objects, activities, and familiar characteristics

- Functions of the full stop and question mark: indicating the end of a sentence

- Common terms of addressing in conversations at home and at school

- Some common conversational etiquettes at home and at school: greetings, introductions, thanks, apologies, permissions

- Information through images (non-verbal communication means)

What is the age of grade 1 students in Vietnam?

Based on Clause 1 of Article 28 of Education Law 2019:

Priamry levels and Ages in General Education

1. Priamry levels and ages in general education are regulated as follows:

a) Primary education lasts for 5 years, from the first grade to the end of the fifth grade. The age of students entering the first grade is 6 years old, calculated according to the year;

b) Lower secondary education lasts for 4 years, from the sixth grade to the end of the ninth grade. Students entering the sixth grade must complete the primary school program. The age of students entering the sixth grade is 11 years old, calculated according to the year;

c) Upper secondary education lasts for 3 years, from the tenth grade to the end of the twelfth grade. Students entering the tenth grade must have a lower secondary school diploma. The age of students entering the tenth grade is 15 years old, calculated according to the year.

2. Cases where students can study ahead of grade level or are older than the prescribed age in Clause 1 of this Article include:

a) Students who study ahead of grade level in case of early intellectual development;

b) Students who are older than the prescribed age in case of grade repetition or those living in areas with especially difficult socio-economic conditions, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students with physical or intellectual development delays, orphans without shelter, students from poor households, students returning from abroad, and other cases according to legal regulations.

Based on Article 33 of the Primary School Charter issued with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDĐT, the age of primary school students is regulated as follows:

Age of Primary School Students

  1. The age for grade 1 students is 6 years old, calculated by the year. Children with disabilities, children with physical or intellectual delays, children in areas with especially difficult socio-economic conditions, ethnic minority children, orphans without shelter, children returning from abroad, and children of foreigners studying and working in Vietnam can enter the first grade at an older age but not exceeding 3 years. Cases where children enter the first grade exceeding 3 years compared to the regulations will be decided by the head of the Department of Education and Training.

Primary students can be older than the prescribed age in case of grade repetition; students living in areas with especially difficult socio-economic conditions, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students with physical or intellectual delays, orphans without shelter, students returning from abroad, and other cases according to legal regulations.

However, except for students repeating grades; students living in areas with especially difficult socio-economic conditions, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students with physical or intellectual delays, orphans without shelter, students returning from abroad, and other cases as regulated by law, the age of grade 1 students can be older than 6 years but not exceeding 3 years.

Cases where children enter the first grade exceeding 3 years compared to the regulations will be decided by the head of the Department of Education and Training.
