I. SUBJECT CHARACTERISTICS
Arts is a subject within the field of arts education. In the general education curriculum, the Arts subject forms and develops students' Arts abilities, an expression of aesthetic capability in the field of Arts; concurrently contributes with other subjects and educational activities to form and develop students' essential qualities and general competencies, especially in inheriting and promoting national cultural and artistic heritage in alignment with contemporary development.

The content of Arts education is divided into two stages: basic education and career-oriented education.
- Basic Education Stage: Arts is a mandatory education content from grades 1 to 9. The program provides opportunities for students to become acquainted with and experience Arts knowledge through various forms of activities; forming and developing students' observation and artistic perception skills, awareness and expression of the world; the ability to perceive and explore, experience cultural and aesthetic values in life and art.
- Career-Oriented Education Stage: Arts is an elective subject based on students' interests and career orientation. The content of Arts education is expanded, developing the knowledge and skills formed during the basic education stage, approaching groups of careers related to Arts and having practical applications; helping students develop independent thinking, critical analysis, and creative artistic abilities; understanding the role and application of Arts in life; laying the groundwork for students to explore and orient their careers in line with their personal needs and societal adaptation.

What are perspectives for building the 2018 General Education Curriculum for Arts in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Section 2 of the Arts General Education Curriculum issued under Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the perspective for building the curriculum is as follows:
The Arts curriculum adheres to the viewpoints and orientations stated in the overall curriculum; simultaneously, stemming from the characteristics of the subject, it emphasizes several viewpoints as follows:
(1). The Arts curriculum creates opportunities for students to access national and global culture and art based on applying basic Arts knowledge in conjunction with educational science.
(2). The Arts curriculum selects knowledge appropriate to the goals of general education, the psychological and physiological characteristics of students' age groups, and the teaching conditions.
Through various contents and forms of teaching organization, on the basis of ensuring the required achievement levels, the program is flexibly designed and can be adjusted to suit different groups of students, educational institutions, and localities.
During implementation, the curriculum is regularly updated and developed in line with the development of art and practical requirements.
What are core educational contents of the 2018 General Education Curriculum for Arts in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Section 5 of the Arts General Education Curriculum issued under Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the Arts curriculum develops two content streams: Arts Creation and Applied Arts, with foundational knowledge based on elements and principles of creation.
At the primary level, the educational content includes Theory and History of Arts, Painting, Graphic Arts, Sculpture, and Handicrafts; within which, the content of Theory and History of Arts is confined to acquainting students with and exploring authors, products, works, and cultural and artistic heritage, introduced and integrated into practice and Arts discussions.
At the lower secondary school level, the educational content includes Theory and History of Arts, Painting, Graphic Arts, Sculpture, Industrial Design, Fashion Design, and Graphic Design; within which, the content of Theory and History of Arts is confined to exploring authors, products, works, and cultural and artistic heritage, introduced and integrated into practice and Arts discussions.
At the upper secondary school level, students in each of grades 10, 11, and 12 can choose 4 out of 10 content areas, including Theory and History of Arts, Painting, Graphic Arts, Sculpture, Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Stage and Film Art Design, Multimedia Art Design, and Architecture; within which, the content of Theory and History of Arts is both independently carried out and ensured to be integrated into practice and Arts discussions.
