Do primary school students in Vietnam have to wear uniforms or self-made clothes?

At the beginning of a new academic year, while schools do not require parents and students to purchase new uniforms, as long as students wear clean and neat clothes, parents typically still purchase uniforms for their children each year.

According to Article 3 of Circular 26/2009/TT-BGDDT, which stipulates the principles for wearing uniforms, the following guidelines apply:

Principles of wearing uniforms and ceremonial attire

1. Principles of wearing uniforms

a) Ensure aesthetic value, suitable for the gender and age of students and the cultural identity of the nation, characteristics of each locality, while also ensuring stability and reflecting the traditions of the school.

b) Suitable for weather conditions, convenient for studying, living at school, and participating in other activities.

c) Ensure cost-efficiency, appropriate for the economic and social conditions of each locality and each school.

2. Principles of wearing ceremonial attire

a) Ensure uniformity within each school or each educational level.

b) Ensure aesthetics and educational value during graduation ceremonies.

c) Distinguish between graduates of different educational levels: intermediate, university.

d) Ensure scientific principles, reflecting the traditional cultural beauty of Vietnam.

3. In cases where uniforms are sponsored by domestic or foreign organizations or individuals, the uniforms and ceremonial attire must comply with the regulations of this document and sponsorship should not be abused for advertising.

4. Encourage students of ethnic minorities to wear their traditional costumes on holidays, New Year’s, festivals, and days when the school does not require uniforms.

Thus, according to the regulations, parents with children in primary school (grades 1 to 5) typically prepare uniforms, which often consist of trousers and white shirts, or specific uniforms as required by each school. These uniforms must also comply with the principles set forth above.
