The legend of Bánh chưng bánh giầy tells the story of the 6th Hung King. After defeating the An invaders, the king wanted to pass the throne to the son who could offer the most special and meaningful gift. While the other princes sought exotic and rare delicacies, Lang Lieu, the 18th son, lacked the means to do so. One night, Lang Lieu dreamed of a deity who showed him how to make two kinds of cakes from sticky rice, green beans, and pork. The deity explained that Banh Chung, square-shaped, symbolized the Earth, while Banh Giay, round-shaped, symbolized Heaven. Lang Lieu followed the deity’s instructions and presented the two cakes to his father. The king was greatly pleased with the profound significance of the cakes. Banh Chung, with its green dong leaves wrapping, represented the Earth's protection, while pure white Banh Giay symbolized Heaven's purity. The king decided to pass the throne to Lang Lieu, and since then, Bánh chưng bánh giầy have become traditional dishes during the Vietnamese New Year and other festivals. |
