Under the General education program in Literature issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the required language competencies in the 5th-grade Vietnamese language curriculum are as follows:
- More focus on the requirement to understand specific contents, understand themes, understand lessons derived from texts.
- Write a complete short essay, mainly narratives, descriptive, and simple introductory essays.
- Write narratives of read stories, witnessed or participated events, imagined stories by students; describe familiar objects and phenomena; introduce objects and activities close to student life. Write paragraphs expressing emotions and thoughts upon reading a story or poem, witnessing an event that evokes many emotions in students; provide opinions on simple issues in studying and life; write some types of texts like: autobiographies, messages, invitations, schedules, applications,...; initial ability to write following a process; the writing should include three parts (introduction, body, conclusion).
- Present ideas and emotions understandably; initial ability to use appropriate gestures and expressions when speaking; retell clearly a story that has been read or heard; share and exchange feelings, attitudes, and thoughts about discussed issues; explain an object or simple process.
- Listen with an appropriate attitude and understand basic content; recognize the speaker’s emotions; know how to respond to what has been heard.
Thus, 5th-grade students in Vietnam are required to be able to write a complete short essay.

- Be able to write a paragraph or text clearly and coherently presenting the main topic and information; appropriate type; with beginning, development, and conclusion; connecting sentences and paragraphs.
Writing practice
- Be able to write a narrative retelling a story that has been read or heard with creative details.
- Be able to write a descriptive essay about a person or scenery using comparisons, personification, and evocative words to highlight features of the described subject.
- Be able to write a paragraph expressing personal emotions about an event or a poem or story.
- Be able to write a paragraph explaining why to support or oppose a meaningful phenomenon or event in life.
- Be able to write a paragraph introducing a character in a book or animated film watched (appearance, gestures, actions, language).
- Be able to write work reports, and activity programs, using tables and charts.
