Based on the provisions of Article 2 of Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:
The general education program is implemented according to the following timeline:
1. From the 2020-2021 school year for Grade 1.
2. From the 2021-2022 school year for Grades 2 and 6.
3. From the 2022-2023 school year for Grades 3, 7, and 10.
4. From the 2023-2024 school year for Grades 4, 8, and 11.
5. From the 2024-2025 school year for Grades 5, 9, and 12.
The 2018 general education program is applied to students from Grades 1 to 12 in the 2024-2025 school year.
From the 2024-2025 school year, Grades 5, 9, and 12 will start learning the 2018 general education program for the first time. Therefore, the subjects for students in Grades 5, 9, and 12 will adopt new textbooks to align with the 2018 general education program.

What content are included in the new textbooks for grades 5, 9, and 12 in Vietnam?
According to Article 5 of the Regulations on Standards and Procedures for Compiling and Revising Textbooks; Standards for Organizations and Individuals Compiling Textbooks; Organization and Operation of the National Textbook Assessment Council, issued with Circular 33/2017/TT-BGDDT, the content of the new textbooks for Grades 5, 9, and 12 must meet the following conditions:
- The content of the textbook must accurately and fully reflect the content of the subject or educational activity program; ensure fundamental, scientific, practical values and suitability with the realities of Vietnam.
- Terms, concepts, definitions, data, events, and images must be precise, objective, consistent, and suitable for the students' level; data, events, and images must have clear origins.
- New scientific achievements related to the subject or educational activity program are updated to meet international integration requirements and are suitable for the objectives of the program.
- Education content on national sovereignty, human rights, children's rights, gender equality, sustainable development, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation must be presented reasonably.
What are mandatory subjects for grades 5, 9, and 12 in Vietnam?
In Section 4 of the General Education Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:
1. Basic Education Stage
1.1. Primary Level
a) Educational Content
Compulsory subjects and educational activities: Vietnamese Language; Mathematics; Morality; Foreign Language 1 (in Grades 3, 4, and 5); Natural and Social Sciences (in Grades 1, 2, and 3); History and Geography (in Grades 4 and 5); Science (in Grades 4 and 5); ICT and Technology (in Grades 3, 4, and 5); Physical Education; Arts (Music, Fine Arts); Experience Activities.
Optional subjects: Ethnic Minority Language, Foreign Language 1 (in Grades 1 and 2).
b) Educational Duration
Conducts teaching 2 sessions/day, with no more than 7 lessons per day; each lesson is 35 minutes. Educational institutions not yet able to organize teaching 2 sessions/day follow the educational plan as guided by the Ministry of Education and Training.
