What is the role of the 17th Parallel in the Geneva Agreement?

The Geneva Agreement used the 17th parallel as a temporary military demarcation line to temporarily divide Vietnam into two regions after the war ended. The North was completely liberated and began the process of economic recovery and development, building a solid rear base for the struggle for national unification.

Role of the 17th Parallel in the Geneva Agreement

Significance of the 17th Parallel:

Ending the War: The Geneva Agreement marked the end of a brutal phase of warfare, bringing peace to the people of Indochina.

Facilitating National Elections: The temporary division was intended to create conditions for organizing free general elections in 1956, aiming to reunify the country.

Liberating the North: The North was completely liberated, creating conditions for economic recovery and building a strong rear for the resistance against the U.S. invasion.

However, this division also brought about serious consequences:

- Division of the country: The 17th parallel became a boundary dividing the country and families, causing much pain and loss for the people.

- Opening the way for invasive war: The U.S. exploited this situation to intervene in the South, violating the Geneva Agreement and carrying out a brutal invasion war.

The 17th Parallel as a Symbol:

Symbol of Division: Hien Luong Bridge on the 17th parallel became a painful symbol of the country's division.

Symbol of the Aspiration for Unification: At the same time, it also symbolized the national aspiration for reunification.

Conclusion:

The Geneva Agreement and the use of the 17th parallel are significant chapters in the history of Vietnam. They leave profound lessons about the nation's struggle for independence and unification.
