Under Section 1 of the Appendix of the General Education Program for Literature attached to Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the characteristics of 5th-grade Vietnamese Language are:

- Literature is a subject in the field of Language and Literature Education, taught from grade 1 to grade 12. At the primary education level, this subject is called Vietnamese; at the lower and upper secondary education levels, it is called Literature.

- Literature is an instrumental and aesthetic-humanistic subject; it provides students with the means to communicate, serves as a foundation for studying all subjects and educational activities; it is also a vital tool in educating students on high cultural, literary, and national linguistic values, fostering healthy emotions, humanitarian sentiments, benevolent, altruistic living,...

- Through linguistic texts and vivid artistic imagery in literary works, via reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities, Literature plays a substantial role in helping students form and develop good qualities as well as core competencies to live and work effectively and to engage in lifelong learning.

- The content of Literature is comprehensive, encompassing cultural knowledge, ethics, and philosophy,... related to various subjects and educational activities such as History, Geography, Arts, Civic Education, Foreign Languages, Natural and Social Sciences, Experiential Activities, Career Orientation,... Literature closely relates to life; it helps students pay attention to and connect with everyday life, relate, and possess problem-solving skills for real-world issues.

- The core content of the subject includes fundamental, essential knowledge and skills about Vietnamese and literature that meet the required standards of student qualities and competencies at each educational level; it is divided into two phases: the basic education phase and the career-oriented education phase.

- Basic Education Phase: The program is designed around core strands corresponding to reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Vietnamese and literary knowledge is integrated during the reading, writing, speaking, and listening instruction process. The language materials are selected and organized according to the students' levels of receptivity at each educational level.

- The goal of this phase is to enable students to use Vietnamese proficiently for effective communication in life and to perform well in other subjects and educational activities; to form and develop literary competence, an expression of aesthetic competence; simultaneously cultivate thoughts, and emotions to develop students' souls, and character.

- Career-Oriented Education Phase: The program reinforces and develops the results from the basic education phase, helping students enhance their language and literary competencies, especially in literary text reception; strengthen the skills of creating argumentative texts and informational texts of greater complexity in content and writing techniques; provide some practical knowledge of literary history and literary theory in terms of reading and writing; continue to nurture thoughts, emotions, soul, and character so students become responsible citizens.

- Additionally, within each year, students oriented toward social sciences and humanities can choose to learn specific study topics. These topics aim to enhance literature and language knowledge, the skill of applying knowledge to practice, and meet students' interests, needs, and career orientation.

What specific competencies are required for 5th-grade students after completing the Vietnamese language curriculum?

Under sub-section 2, Section IV, Appendix of the General Education Program for Literature issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the specific competencies required after completing the 5th-grade Vietnamese language curriculum for primary school students are as follows:

- Linguistic Competence

Read accurately, fluently, and expressively; understand the main content of the text, primarily explicit content; initially understand implicit content such as the theme and lessons drawn from the texts.

At the elementary level, reading requirements include technical reading skills and reading comprehension.

For students in the early grades (grade 1, grade 2), both reading accuracy at an appropriate speed and understanding the simple content of texts are emphasized.

For students in grade 3, grade 4, and grade 5, greater emphasis is placed on understanding concrete content, themes, and lessons drawn from texts.

From grade 1 to grade 3, write with correct spelling, vocabulary, and grammar; write some sentences and short paragraphs; in grades 4 and 5, begin writing short complete essays, primarily narrative, descriptive, and simple introductions.

Write texts narrating the stories read, events witnessed or participated in, stories imagined by students; describe familiar objects and phenomena; introduce objects and activities close to students' lives.

Write paragraphs expressing students' feelings and thoughts when reading a story or poem when witnessing an event that evokes emotions; express opinions on a simple issue in study and life; write various types of documents such as autobiographies, messages, invitations, schedules, applications,...; initially know how to write following a process; the essay needs to have three parts (introduction, body, conclusion).

Clearly present ideas and emotions; initially know how to use appropriate gestures and body language when speaking; clearly retell the stories read or heard; share and exchange feelings, attitudes, thoughts on discussed topics; explain a simple object or process.

Listen with an appropriate attitude and understand the basic content; recognize speaker's emotions; know how to respond to what has been heard.

- Literary Competence

Differentiate between narrative and poetry texts (prose fragments and verse fragments); recognize the content of the text and the writer's attitude and feelings; begin to understand the effect of some literary elements like language, characters, storyline, rhyme, comparison, personification.

Know how to associate, imagine, and express in a literary manner when writing and speaking.

For students in grades 1 and 2: recognize what or whom the text is about; identify characters in stories and rhymes in poetry; distinguish between stories and poetry.

For students in grades 3, 4, and 5: know how to read literary texts expressively; summarize the main content of stories and poems; comment on characters, events, and the writer's attitude and feelings in texts; identify time and place, some rhymes, poetic rhythms, beautiful and unique words and images and the effects of literary devices like personification, comparison.

Understand the meaning or lessons drawn from texts. Write narratives, descriptions showing emotions, and imagination.
