  1. Physical education in schools is a mandatory educational subject that is part of the curriculum at all educational levels and training programs. It aims to equip children and students with basic movement knowledge and skills, to form exercise and sports habits, thereby enhancing health, physical development, and stature, and contributing to the achievement of comprehensive educational goals.

Sports activities in schools are voluntary activities for students, organized as extracurricular activities, sports clubs, groups, or individuals according to their interests, gender, age, and health, aiming to perfect movement skills, support the achievement of physical education goals through training and sports competitions, and create conditions for students to exercise their rights to play, entertain, and develop sports talents; discovering and nurturing sports talents.

Thus, physical education is a mandatory educational subject and part of the curriculum. Therefore, university students are required to take physical education.

However, according to Clause 4, Article 8 of Circular 25/2015/TT-BGDDT, it is stipulated that learners who are disabled or do not have sufficient health to study certain contents in the physical education curriculum may be considered for exemption, reduction of unsuitable contents, or to study alternative appropriate contents.

The head of the higher education institution will specifically stipulate the exemption, reduction, and alternative learning contents for the disabled and those who do not have sufficient health to study.

What are objectives of the physical education curriculum at higher education institutions in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 3 of Circular 25/2015/TT-BGDDT, the objectives are stipulated as follows:

The physical education curriculum aims to provide basic movement knowledge and skills, form exercise and sports habits, improve health, physical development, stature, complete personality, enhance learning ability, social activity skills with a positive spirit and attitude, contributing to the achievement of comprehensive educational goals.

Thus, the objective of the physical education curriculum at higher education institutions is to provide basic movement knowledge and skills, form exercise and sports habits.

Additionally, physical education aims to improve health, physical development, stature, complete personality, enhance learning ability, social activity skills with a positive spirit and attitude, contributing to the achievement of comprehensive educational goals.

What are the duties of the drafting committee for the physical education curriculum at higher education institutions in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 5 of Circular 25/2015/TT-BGDDT, the duties of the drafting committee for the physical education curriculum at higher education institutions are as follows:

- Based on current physical education regulations, establish general objectives and specific objectives for each module; determine the structure, build modules of the physical education curriculum, including compulsory and elective modules; methods of evaluation;

- Design detailed syllabuses for each module; determine theoretical and practical requirements for each module; determine quality assurance conditions, and ensure safety for learners and teachers when implementing the modules;

- Organize workshops to collect opinions on the physical education curriculum;

- Complete the draft physical education curriculum based on feedback and submit it to the academic and training council of the training institution for review and undertaking accreditation procedures.

How many credits is the physical education curriculum at higher education institutions in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 4 of Circular 25/2015/TT-BGDDT, the amount of knowledge is stipulated as follows:

Amount of Knowledge

The amount of knowledge of the physical education curriculum that learners need to accumulate is a minimum of 3 (three) credits. Higher education institutions specifically stipulate the amount of knowledge of this subject in accordance with the requirements of each training discipline.

Thus, the physical education curriculum at higher education institutions is 3 (three) credits.
