Based on Article 5 of the Regulation on the management of foreign nationals studying in Vietnam issued together with Circular 30/2018/TT-BGDDT stipulating health and age requirements as follows:
Health and age requirements
- Foreign students must be in good health to study in Vietnam. After arriving in Vietnam, foreign students must have a health check at a medical facility designated by the receiving educational institution or the service facility for foreign students appointed by Vietnam. In case of having dangerous contagious diseases as stipulated by Vietnamese law or not being healthy enough to study, foreign students must return to their home country.
2. Age requirements for Agreement-sponsored students follow the international treaties that Vietnam is a member of. There is no age restriction for non-Agreement students.
Thus, international students in Vietnam are subject to age requirements according to the international treaties that Vietnam is a member of for Agreement-sponsored students.
There is no age restriction for foreign students who are not part of international agreements to which Vietnam is a member.

Language used in teaching and learning
- Vietnamese is the official language used in national education institutions of Vietnam.
- Foreign students can study, research, and practice in other languages that the educational institution is permitted to use in training.
Thus, when studying at universities in Vietnam, foreign nationals use Vietnamese as the official language in national education institutions of Vietnam.

What are language requirements for international students in Vietnam?
Based on Article 6 of the Regulation on the management of foreign nationals studying in Vietnam issued together with Circular 30/2018/TT-BGDDT stipulating the language requirements as follows:
Language requirements
1. Foreign students who have graduated from levels of education in the Vietnamese education system, including primary, secondary, college, university, master's, and doctoral degrees in Vietnamese or have achieved a Vietnamese proficiency level equivalent to B2 (level 4/6) or higher according to the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework regulated in Circular 17/2015/TT-BGDDT dated September 1, 2015, issued by the Minister of Education and Training, are exempt from the Vietnamese language requirement.
- Foreign students who register to study, research, or practice in other languages that the receiving educational institution is allowed to use in training need to meet the language proficiency requirements according to specific program regulations. Foreign students who are native speakers (of the language used in study, research, practice) or have graduated from primary, secondary, college, university, or master's, doctoral degrees in that language are exempt from the foreign language requirement.
- Foreign students who do not have sufficient Vietnamese proficiency to enter the official program taught in Vietnamese must take preparatory Vietnamese language courses
a) The Ministry of Education and Training arranges Agreement-sponsored students to study at institutions providing preparatory Vietnamese language training. Receiving educational institutions of non-Agreement students must arrange for these students to take preparatory Vietnamese language courses or send them to institutions providing preparatory Vietnamese language training;
b) The duration of the preparatory Vietnamese language course for Agreement students follows the international treaties that Vietnam is a member of; for non-Agreement students, it follows the training agreement or contract signed with the Vietnamese educational institution;
c) After completing the preparatory course, foreign students must take a Vietnamese proficiency test; if they meet the requirements, they will be transferred to the official program. If they do not meet the requirements, they must continue to study supplementary courses and take another proficiency test until they meet the requirements and are granted a certificate to be transferred to the official program.
Thus, international students in Vietnam must achieve a Vietnamese proficiency level equivalent to B2 (level 4/6) or higher according to the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework.
