What are the perspectives on developing the History and Geography curriculum in Vietnam?

According to Section 2 of the History and Geography Education Curriculum (primary education) issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the perspectives on developing the History and Geographycurriculum in Vietnam emphasizes following contents:

- The History and Geography curriculum integrates the content of historical education, geography, and some cultural and social content into connections about space and time; integrates environmental protection content, human value education; links theory with practice, links educational content with reality to form and develop in students the specific capacities of the subject and the primary qualities and general competences stipulated in the Overall Curriculum.

The curriculum connects with other subjects and educational activities such as: Nature and Society, Science, Ethics, Experiential Activities,... helping students to integrate knowledge and skills of many subjects and educational activities to solve problems in learning and life, suitable for their age.

- Based on inheriting and promoting the advantages of the History and Geography curriculum in the current general education program and learning from the experiences of advanced countries in the world, the History and Geography curriculum selects the basic and simple knowledge about nature, population, some economic activities, history, and culture of regions, Vietnam, and the world; events, historical figures reflecting major milestones in the process of building and defending the nation of Vietnam.

The content of the subject ensures both scientific accuracy and suitability for the psychological characteristics and cognitive level of students.

- The curriculum is designed with gradually expanding geographical and social spaces, from the geography and history of the local area, region, and Vietnam to the geography and history of neighboring countries, the region, and the world.

- The curriculum selects practical content for forming and developing students' qualities and competencies through the method of organizing active learning activities such as: exploring historical and geographical issues, practice and application (applying what has been learned to identify and solve real-life problems),...

- The curriculum is designed flexibly to adjust to the economic and social conditions of local areas; suitable for the abilities of teachers, different student groups, and the reality of teaching at schools, while still ensuring the common standard of general education across the country, gradually approaching the regional and global level.

According to the provisions of Article 3 Circular 27/2023/TT-BGDDT, the criteria for selecting textbooks is as follows:

Criteria for selecting textbooks

1. Suitable with the socio-economic characteristics of the locality.

2. Suitable with the conditions for organizing teaching and learning at the educational institution.

The selection of History and Geography textbooks at the primary education must consider the textbooks' suitability with the socio-economic characteristics of each locality and the conditions for organizing teaching and learning at each educational institution.
