What are the 04 reasons making the theory of surplus value a boulder?

The economic theory of Karl Marx is considered as the boulder, specifically the theory of surplus value. Friedrich Engels, Karl Marx’s close friend and collaborator, was the first to assert that the theory of surplus value is the "boulder" in the economic theoretical system of Marxism.

Why is the theory of surplus value considered a boulder? There are four reasons to explain this issue as follows:

Firstly, the theory of surplus value clarifies the origin of surplus value: According to Marx, surplus value is the portion of value created by the labor of wage workers, which exceeds the value of labor power that the capitalist must pay in the form of wages. This is the source of profit – the ultimate goal of capitalist production.

Surplus value does not arise from the exchange of goods or from fixed capital (machinery, buildings), but from the living labor of workers. This clarifies the exploitative nature of capitalism.

Secondly, the theory of surplus value shows that the relationship between capital and labor is not merely an economic relationship, but an exploitative one, where the bourgeois class expropriates surplus value from the working class. This explains why capitalism cannot escape the fundamental contradiction between capital and labor.

Thirdly, through the theory of surplus value, Marx analyzes laws such as the accumulation and concentration of capital, cyclical economic crises, and the relative and absolute impoverishment of the working class.

Fourthly, the theory of surplus value provides a theoretical foundation for the struggle to emancipate the working class and build a communist society. When workers understand the exploitative nature, they will strive to overthrow capitalism.

Regarding the meaning of "boulder". Referring to the theory of surplus value as a "boulder" is a metaphor for its fundamental, core, and indispensable role in the economic theory system of Marxism.

"boulder" evokes the image of a large, solid stone placed at the foundation of an architectural structure. Similarly, the theory of surplus value is the basis for constructing the entire economic theoretical system of Marx.

A "boulder" not only serves as a foundation but also connects and unifies other elements of the theoretical system. Without the theory of surplus value, other aspects such as the theory of capitalist contradictions, economic crises, and class struggle would neither be explicable nor sustainable.

Additionally, "boulder" also signifies irreplaceability. In Marx's thought, the theory of surplus value is the core theoretical part, not only explaining the exploitative nature of capitalism but also predicting its inevitable downfall.
