What are the general goals when teaching grade 12 English in Vietnam?
According to Section III of the General Education Program for English, promulgated together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the evaluation of grade 12 English will follow the methods as shown below:
* General Goals
- The General Education Program for English helps students acquire a new tool for communication, forming and developing their ability to communicate in English through the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
By the end of the general education program, students will be able to communicate at Level 3 of the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam, laying the foundation for students to use English in their studies, develop lifelong learning habits to become global citizens in the integration era.
- The General Education Program for English helps students gain a general understanding of the country, people, and cultures of some English-speaking countries and other countries worldwide; cultivate a positive attitude and good feelings towards the country, people, culture, and language of those nations.
Additionally, the General Education Program for English fosters and develops necessary qualities and competencies in students for the workforce: awareness and responsibility in labor, career orientation, and career choice suitable to their capabilities, preferences, and adaptability in the new industrial revolution context.
Furthermore, the specific goals for high school level are as follows:
Upon completing the high school level English program, students will be able to:
- Use English as a communication tool through four skills—listening, speaking, reading, writing—to meet basic and practical communication needs on familiar topics related to school, recreational activities, jobs, etc.
- Continue to form and develop basic knowledge of English, including pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar; through English, gain broader understanding of the countries, people, cultures of English-speaking nations and other countries, understand and respect cultural diversity, and initially reflect the values of Vietnamese culture in English.
- Use English to enhance the quality of learning in other subjects in the general education program.
- Use English to pursue higher learning goals or be able to work immediately after graduating from high school.
- Apply different learning methods to manage study time, use information technology in learning and self-study, strengthen self-study methods and self-evaluation, take responsibility for learning outcomes, and develop lifelong learning habits.
