On November 17, within the framework of the 41st session of the UNESCO General Assembly in Paris (France), Vietnam was elected a member of the Executive Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the term 2021-2025.

With a very high number of votes, 163/178, equivalent to 92%, this is the 5th time Vietnam has been elected a member of the UNESCO Executive Council.

According to Mr. Mai Phan Dung - Secretary General of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, Director General of the Department of Cultural Diplomacy and UNESCO, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and head of the Vietnamese delegation to the 41st UNESCO General Assembly - The fact that Vietnam becomes a member of the Executive Council shows the country's increasing position and prestige in the international arena, is the recognition of the international community for Vietnam's contributions in its relationship with UNESCO.

This is the result of Vietnam's comprehensive and extensive foreign policy of multilateralization, diversification and international integration, It is also the result of a methodical and synchronous implementation of the candidacy plan in recent years.

Mr. Dung said that becoming a member of the Executive Council is a good opportunity for Vietnam to demonstrate its "double responsibility" in protecting national interests, taking advantage of UNESCO's ideas and initiatives to serve the cause of national construction and development in a sustainable, synchronous and comprehensive manner. At the same time, Vietnam will have the opportunity to make substantial contributions to international issues that UNESCO is interested in promoting.

Vietnam was a member of the Executive Council of UNESCO for the term 1978-1983, 2001-2005, 2009-2013, and the term 2015-2019.

Dung added that in this term 2021-2025, Vietnam will contribute more actively and actively to UNESCO's major programs and orientations in five fields of education, culture, and natural science. , social sciences and information communication.

Meanwhile, affirming the role and prestige of Vietnam at UNESCO in particular and in the international arena in general, thereby contributing to the successful implementation of the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party, Resolution No. 22 -NQ/TW of the Politburo on international integration and Directive No. 25-CT/TW of the Secretariat on promoting and elevating multilateral external relations to 2030.

The 58-member Executive Council is UNESCO's key executive body, responsible for developing short-term, medium-term programs and plans and the budget of the organization, voting on the candidate for the director-general of UNESCO for approval by the UNESCO General Assembly.
