Subjects and conditions for taking the exam for selecting excellent students are specified as follows:
- Each Department of Education and Training boarding high school for ethnic minorities under the Ministry of Education and Training and each university, academy, or university with a specialized high school are registered as participating units;
- Candidates are students studying at the high school level with a conduct (or training) rating and academic performance (or learning) of good or better according to the final results of the semester (or school year) adjacent to the exam and being selected for the team of the participating unit;
- Each candidate is only allowed to participate in one exam.

The national exam for selecting excellent students has two (02) exam sessions for Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics and Foreign Languages; there is one (01) exam session for the subjects Literature, History, Geography. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology subjects may have one (01) additional practice exam.
The exam time for the written exam and the Informatics exam is 180 minutes.
Exam time for the practical exam for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and the speaking exam for Foreign Language subjects:
Follow the Guidelines for organizing exams to select excellent students at the national level (referred to as the Guidelines for organizing exams) every year of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Candidates participating in the national excellent student exam will have the following responsibilities:
- Be present at the exam location on the prescribed date and time. Candidates who arrive late after the exam time will not be allowed to take the exam.
- Present your Admission Card (for the national excellent student exam) or ID card (for the Olympic team selection exam) before entering the exam room.
- Sit in the correct seat according to the prescribed registration number in the exam room; sign the list of candidates participating in each exam session.
- Only documents and items specified in Article 26 of these Regulations may be brought into the exam room.
- When receiving the exam question paper, you must check the page number of the exam question paper and write the registration number on the exam question paper. If you find that the exam is missing pages or is torn, damaged, smudged, or blurred, you must notify the examiner in the exam room at least 10 minutes after the start of the exam timer.
- During the time in the exam room, you are not allowed to exchange, discuss, or copy exam papers; Do not tolerate exam cheating by others; must keep order; When you want to have an opinion or want to leave the exam room, you must raise your hand and can only express your opinion or leave the exam room when the invigilator in the exam room allows it; When unusual events occur, you must follow the supervisor's instructions.
- The exam must be written with one type of pen and one type of ink; Do not write in red ink or pencil (except when drawing a circle with a compass); Do not mark or make separate symbols in the test; Broken writing must be crossed out and must not be erased in any way (including using an erasing pen).
- Informatics candidates take the test and record it on the computer's hard drive; All seals must be kept on the computer until the end of the exam.
- When there is an end-of-test signal:
+ For the written exam: All candidates must stop writing immediately to submit the exam; Clearly state the number of exam papers submitted and sign the exam receipt (including cases where the exam cannot be completed);
+ For the Computer Science exam: All candidates must immediately turn off the computer screen. When the examiner gives permission, the candidate can turn on the computer screen again and unseal the CD drive to write the work to disc; Next, the candidate witnessed the examiner printing his/her test from CD to paper; Candidates sign the CD and printed paper;
+ For practical exams of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and speaking exams of Foreign Language subjects: Candidates must comply with their own regulations, according to the annual exam organization guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training.
- After the exam time ends, candidates can only leave the exam room when the invigilator in the exam room gives permission.
