The glorious tradition of the Vietnam People's Army over 80 years of building, fighting, winning, and developing

The Central Propaganda Department issued Guidelines 160-HD/BTGTW on July 25, 2024, to propagate the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024) and the 35th Anniversary of the All-People National Defense Day (December 22, 1989 - December 22, 2024).

Over 80 years of building, fighting, winning, and developing,  Vietnam People's Army has built a very glorious tradition, concisely summarized in President Ho Chi Minh's praise: “Our Army loyal to the Vietnam Communist Party, devoted to the people, ready to fight and sacrifice for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, for socialism. Any task can be completed, any difficulty can be overcome, any enemy can be defeated”. This tradition is demonstrated in:

- Unwavering loyalty to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Vietnam Communist Party, the State, and the People.

- Determination to fight and win, knowing how to fight and knowing how to win.

- Inseparable bond with the People, the army and people share one will.

- Internal unity; equality of rights and obligations among officers and soldiers, loving and helping each other, unifying will and action from top to bottom.

- Self-disciplined, rigorous discipline.

- Independence, self-reliance, industriousness, thrift for building the Army and the country, respecting and protecting public assets.

- Living a clean, healthy, cultured, honest, modest, simple, and optimistic life.

- Always upholding the spirit of learning, progression, and exemplary, nuanced behavior.

- Sincere, faithful, righteous, and sentimental international solidarity.

History of the All-People National Defense Day in Vietnam

The all-people national defense is a defense characterized as “for the people, by the people, of the people,” developing in the direction of: universal, comprehensive, independent, autonomous, self-reliant, and increasingly modern, closely combining the economy with defense and security, under the leadership of the Communist Party, managed and operated by the State, and ultimately owned by the People, ensuring the peace and stability of the country, ready to defeat any invasion and overthrow actions by imperialist and reactionary forces, solidly defending the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Our Communist Party and State always consistently affirm that building a strong all-people national defense is the revolutionary cause of the entire Communist Party, the entire people, the entire armed forces, and the entire political system, in which the people's armed forces are the core. Vietnam's defense is a peaceful, self-defensive defense with the essence of socialist policies. Vietnam builds its military, defense strength based on the comprehensive strength of the entire country, the great national unity bloc, the entire political system led by the Communist Party of Vietnam, combining national power and the power of the times, combining the power of the all-people defense position with the people's security position. Our Communist Party and State aim to develop the economy and society in conjunction with enhancing defense and security capabilities, closely coordinating defense, security activities with foreign affairs as a unified entity to serve the cause of building and protecting the Fatherland.

The historical practice of nation-building and defending, especially the uprisings, liberation wars, and defense wars conducted by our People under the leadership of the Communist Party, has proven the invincible strength of the great national unity bloc. Regardless of the stage, facing any ruthless enemy, if the overall power of the entire people is rallied, our nation will achieve great victories, ensuring the sustainability of independence, freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Recognizing the role of propaganda, encouragement, and mobilization of the entire people in building a strong all-people national defense, and according to the aspirations of the entire country's military and people, on October 17, 1989, the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the 6th term issued Directive 381-CT/TW deciding on December 22 - the founding day of the Vietnam People's Army as the All-People National Defense Day. On December 22, 1989, for the first time, the All-People National Defense Day was organized in all localities nationwide. Since then, December 22 has become a great festival of the entire nation with activities focused on national defense and the military.
