Regulations on Conservation zones in Vietnam

Pursuant to the provisions of the Law on Biodiversity 2008, the conservation zones include:

(1) National parks

A national park must meet the following major criteria:

- Possessing a natural ecosystem which is nationally and internationally important, specific to or representative of a natural eco-region;

- Being a permanent or seasonal natural habitat of at least one species on the list of endangered precious and rare species prioritized for protection;

- Having special scientific and educational values;

- Having landscape and unique natural beauty of ecotourism value.

(2) Nature reserves

Nature reserves include:

- National-level nature reserves;

- Provincial-level nature reserves.

A national-level nature reserve must meet the following major criteria:

- Possessing a natural ecosystem which is nationally and internationally important, specific to or representative of a natural eco-region;

- Having special scientific and educational values or ecotourism and recreational values.

Provincial-level nature reserves are those set up under provincial-level biodiversity conservation plannings for conserving natural ecosystems in localities.

(3) Wildlife reserves

Wildlife reserves include:

- National-level wildlife reserves;

- Provincial-level wildlife reserves;

A national-level wildlife reserve must meet the following major criteria:

- Being a permanent or seasonal natural habitat of at least one species on the list of endangered precious and rare species prioritized for protection;

- Having special scientific and educational values;

Provincial-level wildlife reserves are those set up under provincial-level biodiversity conservation plannings for conserving wildlife in localities.

(4) Landscape conservation zones

Landscape conservation zones include:

- National-level landscape conservation zones.

- Provincial-level landscape conservation zones.

A landscape conservation zone must meet the following major criteria:

- Having a particular ecosystem:

- Having landscape and unique natural beauty;

- Having scientific, educational, ecotourism and recreational values.

Provincial-level landscape conservation zones are those set up under provincial-level biodiversity conservation plannings for protecting local landscape.

Regulations on criteria for classifying conservation zones in Vietnam

- National-level nature reserves, wildlife reserves and landscape conservation zones are conservation zones meeting the principal criteria specified in Article 17; Clause 2, Article 18; Clause 2, Article 19; and Clause 2, Article 20 of the Law on Biodiversity 2008.

- Provincial-level nature reserves are conservation zones meeting the following principal criteria:

= Possessing a natural ecosystem which is important for. or specific to or representative of ecosystems of, the locality;

= Having special ecological and environmental values for scientific research, education, tourism and convalescence.

- Provincial-level wildlife reserves are conservation zones meeting the following principal criteria:

= Being a permanent or seasonal habitat of wild species on the list of species banned from exploitation in the nature, or a place for breeding or shelter of migratory species;

= Having special ecological and environmental values for scientific research, education, tourism and convalescence.

- Provincial-level landscape conservation zones are conservation zones meeting the following principal criteria:

= Having landscape and unique natural beauty, but failing to meet criteria of national-level landscape conservation zones;

= Having special ecological and environmental values for scientific research, education, tourism and convalescence.

- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment shall assume the prime responsibility for. and coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in promulgating a joint circular specifically guiding the determination of natural ecosystems which are internationally, nationally and locally important; specific to or representative of natural ecosystems of localities; landscape, unique natural beauty; and special ecological and environmental values for scientific research, education, tourism and convalescence.
