In October 2024, what are the public holidays and anniversary days?

October marks the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2024, initiating a busy end-of-year period. Additionally, October also has holidays that many people may not know about or may have forgotten.

Below are the holidays, anniversaries, and traditional days in October 2024:

(1) International Day of Older Persons (October 1)

On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (according to Resolution No. 45/106) designated October 1 every year as the International Day of Older Persons, starting from January 1, 1991. Vietnam is one of the countries that have participated since the early days.

Furthermore, Article 7 of Circular 06/2012/TT-BVHTTDL stipulates:

Organize longevity celebrations for older persons starting from ages 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, and 100 and above on one of the following days: Vietnam Elderly Day (June 6), International Day of Older Persons (October 1), Lunar New Year, or the elder’s birthday.

From this, October 1 every year can be seen as the International Day of Older Persons around the world and also as the beginning of the “Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam” as well as the day to celebrate elderly persons reaching the ages of 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, and 100 and above in Vietnam.

(2) Vietnam Learning Encouragement Day (October 2)

According to Article 1 of Decision 1271/QD-TTg in 2008, October 2 every year is Vietnam Learning Encouragement Day to motivate all sections of the population and social organizations to participate in the work of learning encouragement, talent promotion, and building a learning society; to honor exemplary individuals and collectives with achievements in the learning encouragement and talent promotion efforts.

(3) 70th Anniversary of Liberation Day of the Capital (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024)

On the afternoon of October 9, 1954, the last French soldiers withdrew from Long Bien Bridge, marking the end of the French military presence in Hanoi. By the morning of October 10, 1954, the Capital Regiment and Division 308 entered to take over Hanoi amidst the cheers of hundreds of thousands of residents.

Since then, October 10, 1954, has become a historical milestone, recognizing the tremendous efforts, losses, and sacrifices of our soldiers and people.

Propaganda theme for the 70th Anniversary of Liberation of the Capital (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024): Hanoi – the capital of conscience and human dignity – where the noble, quintessential values of the nation converge, crystallize, and shine.”

Scale of celebration: National level

(4) Traditional Day of Vietnamese Lawyers (October 10)

Alongside commemorating the Liberation Day of the Capital, Article 1 of Decision 149/QD-TTg in 2013 designates October 10 every year as the "Traditional Day of Vietnamese Lawyers".

(5) National Digital Transformation Day (October 10)

According to Article 1 of Decision 990/QD-TTg in 2004 designates October 10 every year as the National Digital Transformation Day.

Thus, it can be seen that the Commemoration of Liberation Day of the Capital, Traditional Day of Vietnamese Lawyers, and National Digital Transformation Day all share the same date, October 10.

(6) Vietnamese Businessmen’s Day (October 13)

Seventy-eight years ago, President Ho Chi Minh wrote a letter to the Vietnamese industrial and commercial sector, emphasizing: "The nation’s welfare is always intertwined with the business endeavors of entrepreneurs."

To uphold the role of entrepreneurs for the country according to the thoughts, ethics, and style of Ho Chi Minh, on September 20, 2004, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai signed Decision 990/QD-TTg in 2004 designating October 13 as “Vietnamese Businessmen’s Day”.

(7) Anniversary of the Founding of the Vietnam Farmers' Union (October 14)

On March 1, 1988, the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party issued Decision No. 42-QD/TW to rename the Vietnam General Association of Collectivized Farmers to the Vietnam Farmers' Union.

At the meeting on January 17, 1991, the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party agreed to designate October 14, 1930, as the founding day of the Vietnam Farmers' Union.

(8) Traditional Day of the Vietnam Youth Federation (October 15)

In December 1994, the third national congress of the Vietnam Youth Federation was held in the capital, Hanoi, with 400 delegates in attendance.

The congress decided to designate October 15, 1956 (the final day of the congress establishing the Vietnam Youth Federation) as the traditional annual day of the Vietnam Youth Federation.

(9) Vietnamese Women's Day (October 20)

On October 20, 1930, the Vietnam Anti-imperialist Women's Association (now renamed the Vietnam Women's Union) was officially established.

To mark this event, the Communist Party of Vietnam decided to designate October 20 every year as the traditional day of the Union and also this day as the anniversary and to honor Vietnamese women, named "Vietnamese Women's Day."

Vietnamese Women's Day (October 20) is one of the two days in Vietnam (along with International Women's Day on March 8) when people honor, give gifts, send wishes, and show appreciation to women.

In 2024, Vietnamese Women's Day (October 20) will fall on a Sunday.

(10) Vietnam Nursing Day (October 26)

On October 26, 1990, the Vietnam Nursing Association was officially established. Since then, October 26 every year is designated as Vietnam Nursing Day.
