1. Hierarchy of command of militia and self-defense forces in Vietnam in 2025

The hierarchy of command of militia and self-defense forces in Vietnam includes:

- Minister of National Defense.

- Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

- Commander of Military Regions, Commanders of Military Services, Commander of the Border Guard, Commander of the Coast Guard, Commander of the Hanoi Capital Command, Commanders of Corps, Commanders of Brigades.

- Commander of the Ho Chi Minh City Command, Chief of the Military Command of the province.

- Chief of the Military Command of the district.

- Head of military enterprises with self-defense organizations.

- Chief of the Military Command of agencies, organizations.

- Chief of the Military Command of the commune.

- Battalion Commander, Fleet Commander, Company Commander, Fleet Chief, Platoon Leader, Squad Leader, Captain, Gunman Leader of Militia and Self-Defense units.

- Hamlet Chief.

The commanding titles of militia and self-defense forces in Vietnam are regulated in Article 19 Law on Militia and Self-Defense Forces 2019 as follows:

- The command positions of the Military Command at the commune level, military command of agencies, organizations include:

+ Chief Commander, Politician;

+ Deputy Commander, Deputy Politician.

- The command positions of the Militia and Self-Defense units include:

+ Battalion Commander, Battalion Politician, Deputy Battalion Commander, Deputy Battalion Politician; Fleet Commander, Fleet Politician, Deputy Fleet Commander, Deputy Fleet Politician;

+ Company Commander, Company Politician, Deputy Company Commander, Deputy Company Politician; Fleet Chief, Fleet Politician, Deputy Fleet Chief, Deputy Fleet Politician;

+ Platoon Leader;

+ Squad Leader, Captain, Gunman Leader;

+ Hamlet Chief concurrently commands the local militia unit.

3. Designation and discharge of commanding titles of militia and self-defense forces in Vietnam

- The authority to appoint command positions of the Militia and Self-Defense Forces, excluding self-defense command positions in military enterprises, is regulated as follows:

+ Military Region Commander, Naval Service Commander, Commander of Hanoi Capital Command decide on the appointment of battalion, fleet commanders of the Militia and Self-Defense Forces;

+ Commander of Hanoi Capital Command, Commander of Ho Chi Minh City Command, Chief of the Provincial Military Command decide on the appointment of company, fleet commanders of the Militia and Self-Defense Forces; Naval Service Commander decides on the appointment of self-defense fleet commanders under their management;

+ Chief of the District Military Command decides on the appointment of Hamlet Chief, Platoon Leader, Squad Leader, Captain, and Gunman Leader of the Militia and Self-Defense Forces;

+ Commander of Hanoi Capital Command, Commander of Ho Chi Minh City Command, Chief of the Provincial Military Command decide on the appointment of command positions of the Military Command of agencies, organizations;

+ Chairperson of the District People's Committee decides on the appointment of command positions of the commune-level Military Command.

- The dismissal of command positions of the Militia and Self-Defense Forces is regulated as follows:

+ Dismiss command positions of the Militia and Self-Defense Forces when changing the position of work, changing organization that no longer fits the current position, or no longer meeting the standards and conditions for the current position;

+ The authority that appointed a position has the right to dismiss that position.

- The Minister of National Defense regulates the procedures for appointing and dismissing positions in this Article and the authority to appoint command positions of the self-defense units in military enterprises; regulates the People's Army officers to hold command positions in the Militia and Self-Defense Forces when necessary.
