According to the submission by the Government of Vietnam from the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs MOLISA, the Ministry has proposed a plan for a continuous 7-day or 10-day holiday. At the same time, the Ministry has also proposed holidays on the occasions of New Year's Day, Hung Kings' Commemoration Day, and National Day on September 2.
officials and public employees and workers of administrative agencies, public service units, political organizations, and socio-political organizations (collectively referred to as officials) will have holidays as follows:
New Year
Since New Year's Day falls on Sunday, which coincides with the weekly day off, officials and public employees will have a compensatory day off on Monday, January 2, 2017. The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs proposes that for New Year's holiday, officials and public employees will have days off from December 31, 2016, to January 2, 2017. The total number of days off for this occasion is 3 consecutive days, with no day exchange.
Lunar New Year
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs presents two options for the 2017 Lunar New Year holiday: 7 consecutive days or 10 consecutive days.
According to the Ministry's opinion, they lean towards the 7-day option because a 7-day break is reasonable, neither too short nor too long. Specifically: Lunar New Year holiday according to the schedule “2 days at the end of the year of the Monkey and 3 days at the beginning of the year of the Rooster” and no day exchange, officials and public employees will have a Lunar New Year holiday from January 26, 2017, to February 1, 2017. (That is from the 29th day of the Twelfth lunar month of the year of the Monkey to the 5th day of the First lunar month of the year of the Rooster).
Based on this option, officials and public employees will have 7 consecutive days off for the Lunar New Year. Since the 1st and 2nd days of the Lunar New Year (i.e., January 28 - 29, 2017, Gregorian calendar) coincide with Saturday and Sunday, which are weekly days off, officials and public employees will have compensatory days off on the 4th and 5th days of the Lunar New Year (i.e., January 31 and February 1, 2017, Gregorian calendar).
For the 10-day option, officials will have days off from January 27 to February 5, 2017 (i.e., from the 30th of the Twelfth lunar month of the year of the Monkey to the 9th of the First lunar month of the year of the Rooster), and will make up work on Saturday, February 11, 2017.
Hung Kings' Commemoration Day
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs presents two options:
- Option 1: Only a one-day holiday on Thursday (April 6, 2017), with one working day in between the holidays, which is Friday, April 7, 2017 (i.e., the 11th day of the Third lunar month).- Option 2: A four-day holiday from Thursday, April 6, 2017, to Sunday, April 9, 2017. Make up work on Saturday, April 15, 2017.
According to the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs, a 4-day continuous holiday is more reasonable.
Victory Day April 30, International Labor Day May 1
The total number of days off for this occasion is 4 consecutive days, from April 29, 2017, to May 2, 2017, as Victory Day April 30 coincides with Sunday, which is a weekly day off, so officials and public employees will have a compensatory day off on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.
National Day September 2
National Day on September 2, 2017, falls on Saturday, which coincides with a weekly day off. It is proposed that officials and public employees will have a compensatory day off on Monday, September 4, 2017. The total number of days off is 3 days (from September 2, 2017, to September 4, 2017).
For agencies and organizations that do not have the fixed 2-day weekend off on Saturday and Sunday, they will arrange the holiday schedule based on their specific programs and plans.
