Below are the principles for deducting driver license points and the procedures for deducting driver license points according to the latest regulations in Vietnam.

The principles for deducting points on driver licenses in Vietnam according to Clause 1, Article 50 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP are as follows:
- Points are deducted from a driver license immediately after the administrative penalty decision for a violation, which, according to the provisions of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, warrants point deduction, takes effect;
- In cases where an individual commits multiple administrative violations or commits the same administrative violation multiple times and is penalized at the same time, if there are two or more violations subject to point deduction, points will only be deducted for the violation with the most severe point deduction;
- If the remaining points on a driver license are fewer than the points to be deducted, all remaining points on that driver license will be deducted;
- If a driver license integrates both permanent (motorcycle, motorcycle-like vehicles) and temporary (automobile, automobile-like vehicles, motorized four-wheeler passenger vehicles, motorized four-wheeler cargo vehicles) segments, the authority will deduct points from the permanent license for motorcycle violations and from the temporary license for automobile violations that are subject to point deduction under the regulations;
- No points will be deducted from a driver license while the license is suspended.
The procedure for deducting points on driver licenses according to Clause 3, Article 50 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP is as follows:
- Immediately after the administrative penalty decision takes effect, the deducted points data for the penalized individual will be automatically updated into the database on handling administrative violations related to road traffic order and safety, and the authority responsible for point deduction will notify the individual about the point deduction.
In cases where the Chairman of the District People's Committee or the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee issues an administrative penalty decision for a violation involving point deduction, the Chief of the District Police or the Chief of the Provincial Traffic Police is responsible for updating the driver license point deduction data into the administrative violations handling database related to road traffic order and safety;
- The notification of driver license point deduction is conducted in writing according to the template prescribed by the Minister of Public Security and is handed directly or sent via postal service or notified electronically through a citizen's account registered on the Public Service Portal or Traffic Application on mobile devices, subject to infrastructure, technical, and information conditions; simultaneously, information about the deducted driver license points is updated on the Traffic Police Information Portal. For driver licenses represented in the form of data messages, the authority will update the point deduction status in the electronic identity and electronic identification account on the national identification application.
