Approval of the National Biodiversity Conservation Plan for the 2021 - 2030 eriod, with a vision to 2050 in Vietnam

On November 8, 2024, the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam issued Decision 1352/QD-TTg approving the National Biodiversity Conservation Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

Approval of the National Biodiversity Conservation Plan for the 2021 - 2030 eriod, with a vision to 2050 in Vietnam

Orientation for biodiversity conservation during the 2021 - 2030 period across 8 ecological regions nationwide. To be specific:

1. Northeast Region

- Transition of 45 existing conservation areas (including reclassifying 03, expanding 05 conservation areas) with a total area of approximately 0.4 million hectares; establishment of 09 new conservation areas with a total area of approximately 0.1 million hectares;

- Upgrade and develop, and issue certificates for biodiversity conservation facilities for botanical gardens, zoological gardens, animal rescue centers, herb gardens, gene banks, conservation facilities within the natural museum system;

- Formation of 02 biodiversity corridors with a total area of about 0.02 million hectares;

- Formation of 03 high biodiversity areas with a total area of approximately 0.4 million hectares;

- Formation of 02 significant ecological landscapes with a total area of approximately 0.4 million hectares;

- Formation of 01 important wetland area with an area of approximately 0.01 million hectares.

2. Northwest Region

- Transition of 12 existing conservation areas (including reclassifying 01, expanding 05 conservation areas) with a total area of approximately 0.2 million hectares; establishment of 02 new conservation areas with a total area of approximately 300 hectares;

- Upgrade, develop, and issue certificates for biodiversity conservation facilities for botanical gardens, zoological gardens, animal rescue centers, drug planting gardens, gene banks, conservation facilities within the natural museum system;

- Formation of 02 important wetland areas with an area of approximately 0.02 million hectares.

3. Red River Delta Region

- Transition of 16 existing conservation areas (including expanding 01 conservation area) with a total area of approximately 0.1 million hectares; establishment of 06 new conservation areas with a total area of approximately 0.02 million hectares;

- Transition of 02 biodiversity conservation facilities; issuing certificates for 04 biodiversity conservation facilities; upgrade and develop, and issue certificates for biodiversity conservation facilities for botanical gardens, zoological gardens, animal rescue centers, drug planting gardens, gene banks, conservation facilities within the natural museum system;

- Formation of 01 biodiversity corridor with an area of approximately 0.01 million hectares;

- Formation of 01 significant ecological landscape with a total area of approximately 0.01 million hectares.

4. North Central Region

- Transition of 31 existing conservation areas (including expanding 02 conservation areas) with a total area of approximately 0.7 million hectares; establishment of 08 new conservation areas with a total area of approximately 0.2 million hectares;

- Transition of 02 biodiversity conservation facilities; upgrade, develop, and issue certificates for biodiversity conservation facilities for botanical gardens, zoological gardens, animal rescue centers, drug planting gardens, gene banks, conservation facilities within the natural museum system;

- Transition of 02 biodiversity corridors, formation of 02 biodiversity corridors with a total area of approximately 0.06 million hectares;

- Formation of 06 high biodiversity areas with a total area of approximately 0.3 million hectares;

- Formation of 02 significant ecological landscapes with a total area of approximately 0.3 million hectares.

5. South Central Region

- Transition of 27 existing conservation areas (including reclassifying 02, expanding 04 conservation areas) with a total area of approximately 0.4 million hectares; establishment of 13 new conservation areas with a total area of approximately 3 million hectares;

- Transition of 03 biodiversity conservation facilities; issuing certificates for 03 biodiversity conservation facilities; upgrade, develop, and issue certificates for biodiversity conservation facilities for botanical gardens, zoological gardens, animal rescue centers, drug planting gardens, gene banks, conservation facilities within the natural museum system;

- Transition of 01 existing biodiversity corridor with an area of approximately 0.07 million hectares; formation of 01 biodiversity corridor with a total area of approximately 0.6 million hectares;

- Formation of 11 high biodiversity areas with a total area of approximately 1 million hectares;

- Formation of 04 significant ecological landscapes with a total area of approximately 3 million hectares;

- Formation of 02 important wetland areas with a total area of approximately 0.02 million hectares.

6. Central Highlands Region

- Transition of 15 existing conservation areas (including reclassifying 01, expanding 04 conservation areas) with a total area of approximately 0.5 million hectares; establishment of 06 new conservation areas with a total area of approximately 0.1 million hectares;

- Upgrade and develop, and issue certificates for biodiversity conservation facilities for botanical gardens, zoological gardens, animal rescue centers, herb gardens, gene banks, conservation facilities within the natural museum system;

- Formation of 02 high biodiversity areas with a total area of approximately 0.1 million hectares;

- Formation of 01 significant ecological landscape with a total area of approximately 0.2 million hectares;

- Formation of 02 important wetland areas with a total area of approximately 0.01 million hectares.

7. Southeast Region

- Transition of 10 existing conservation areas (including expanding 02 conservation areas) with a total area of approximately 0.3 million hectares; establishment of 01 new conservation area with a total area of approximately 0.03 million hectares;

- Transition of 01 biodiversity conservation facility; issuing certificates for 01 biodiversity conservation facility; upgrade, develop, and issue certificates for biodiversity conservation facilities for botanical gardens, zoological gardens, animal rescue centers, herb gardens, gene banks, conservation facilities within the natural museum system;

- Formation of 03 important wetland areas with a total area of approximately 0.07 million hectares.

8. Mekong Delta Region

- Transition of 22 existing conservation areas (including expanding 04 conservation areas) with a total area of approximately 0.15 million hectares; establishment of 16 new conservation areas with a total area of approximately 0.1 million hectares;

- Transition of 06 biodiversity conservation facilities; issuing certificates for 01 biodiversity conservation facility; upgrade, develop, and issue certificates for biodiversity conservation facilities for botanical gardens, zoological gardens, animal rescue centers, herb gardens, gene banks, conservation facilities within the natural museum system;

- Formation of 01 biodiversity corridor with an area of approximately 0.09 million hectares.

The planning orientation for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, for nature reserves, biodiversity conservation facilities, biodiversity corridors, high biodiversity areas, significant ecological landscapes, and important wetland areas is detailed in Appendices I, II, III, IV, V, VI issued with Decision 1352/QD-TTg. Nature reserves, biodiversity conservation facilities, biodiversity corridors, high biodiversity areas, significant ecological landscapes, and important wetland areas newly planned for establishment during the period 2021 - 2030 in provincial plans, fishery protection and exploitation plans, forestry plans approved by the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam but not included in Appendices I, II, III, IV, V, VI of this Plan shall be implemented according to the contents approved in the provincial plans, fishery protection and exploitation plans, and forestry plans.
