Vietnam: Reducing the designed speed of railways intersecting roads

On June 16, 2017, the National Assembly of Vietnam officially approved the Law on Railway Transport 2017 at the 3rd session of the XIV National Assembly.

The Law on Railway Transport 2017 of Vietnam amends the minimum designed speed of railways intersecting roads from 160 km/hour to 100 km/hour.

This Law also remains the regulation that a rail crossing has to be grade-separated in the following 02 cases:

- Railways intersect roads of grade III or above; railways intersect urban roads;

- Urban railways intersect roads, except for tramway.

Moreover, the Law on Railway Transport 2017 of Vietnam also supplements new regulation on high-speed rail, which is a type of electrified double-track national railway which has a speed of at least 200 km/h and a gauge of 1,435 mm.

The Law on Railway Transport 2017 of Vietnam takes effect from July 01, 2018, replacing the Law on Railway Transport 2005.
