Vietnam: High economic efficiency thanks to “Forest environmental services”

The Law on Forestry 2017 was approved by the 14th National Assembly of Vietnam at its 4th session on November 15, 2017, which is expected to bring benefits to forest people.

The Law on Forestry 2017 of Vietnam specifies forest environmental services, including:

- Land protection, erosion and sedimentation limit of lake beds, river beds and stream beds.

- Regulating and maintaining water resources for production and social life.

- Absorbing and storing carbon of forests; reducing greenhouse gas emission by limiting forest loss and degradation; sustainable forest management and green growth.

- Protecting and maintaining natural landscape beauty, conserving biodiversity of forest ecosystems for trading in tourism services.

- Providing spawning grounds, food sources, natural breeding stock, water resources from forests and environmental elements and forest ecosystems for aquaculture.

Besides, the Law on Forestry 2017 also specifies policies on management, payment, rights and obligations of the parties in the use of forest environmental services.

The Law on Forestry 2017 of Vietnam officially takes effect from January 01, 2019.
