Tightening Controls on Language Centers in Vietnam After the Incident of Calling Students "Mutton-headed"

In the aftermath of a teacher verbally abusing a student by calling them a "mutton-headed" which caused a public uproar in recent days, many language centers in Vietnam have been found to be operating illegally. In response to this situation, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam issued Official Dispatch 1838/ BGDDT-GDTX concerning the enhancement of management for the operation of language and information technology centers.

The Ministry proposes that Departments of Education and Training and schools in Vietnam strictly implement the following contents:

- Review, evaluate thoroughly, inspect, and examine language, informatics, and short-term training centers regarding their operations, licensing, facilities, and the quality of their teachers;

- Publicly disclose information about licensed language, informatics, and short-term training centers;

- Publicly disclose the list of learners who have been awarded language and informatics certificates on the unit's electronic information page.

Before May 25, Departments of Education and Training and schools in Vietnam must report to the Continuing Education Department on the implementation of the above-mentioned contents.

Official Dispatch 1838/BGDDT-GDTX was just issued on May 9, 2018.
