This content is stipulated in Decision No. 1101/QD-BGDDT regarding the structure of the exam and the sample exam for assessing English language proficiency for 12th-grade students completing the pilot English program at the upper secondary level according to the 6-level foreign language proficiency framework used in Vietnam. Accordingly:
- The exam structure consists of 4 skills:
+ Listening comprehension (4 sections with 25 multiple-choice questions, 35 minutes);
+ Reading comprehension (4 sections with 25 multiple-choice questions, 40 minutes);
+ Writing (2 sections including writing letters, emails, notes, messages, postcards, and writing a short story or a descriptive paragraph, 45 minutes);
+ Speaking (3 sections including interview, picture description, and expressing personal opinions or discussing with a paired candidate, 13 minutes).
- Each skill (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, speaking) is assessed on a scale from 0 to 25, with the exam score being the sum of the scores from each skill. The total score is 100, converted to a 10-point scale, rounded to 0.5.
- The total score is used to determine whether one does not pass or passes at the following levels:
+ Below 5.0 is not passing level 3/6;
+ From 5.0 to 6.0 passes level 3/6 – average rank;
+ From 6.5 to 7.5 passes level 3/6 – competent rank;
+ Above 7.5 passes level 3/6 – excellent rank.
Decision 1101/QD-BGDDT is effective from April 6, 2016.
