On August 20, 2024, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam promulgated Circular No. 14/2024/TT-BTNMT on technical regulations on the exploration and codification of reserves and resources of sea sand mines.

Requirements for research on quality of sea sand mines in Vietnam from October 15, 2024

According to the Circular, the research on the quality of sea sand mines shall ensure the following requirements:

- Sampling requirements:

+ Basic samples (particle-sized samples): all exploration works shall undergo sampling;

+ The length of samples shall be based on the characteristics and components of sea sand, not exceeding 2,0m;

+ Thin slice samples of unconsolidated sediments shall be collected based on the product layers of exploration works representing sea sand bodies;

+ Regarding samples of placer deposits, each sea sand body shall have at least 3 samples of placer deposits collected at representative exploration works based on the characteristics and components of sea sand;

+ Samples of seawater shall be collected at the exploration areas to assess the current quality of the water environment;

+ Biological and chemical carbonate samples shall be collected at exploration works, representing sand bodies;

+ Types and numbers of samples shall be specifically designed in exploration schemes.

- Requirements for sample processing and analysis: determine parameters to assess the quality of sea sand and provide appropriate use directions. Basic parameters: particle-sized samples; placer deposits; analysis of heat and x-rays; thin slices of unconsolidated sediments; comprehensive silicate chemistry (SiO2, Al2O3, FeO, Fe2O3, CaO, Na2O, K2O, MgO, Cl-, P2O5, MKN, etc.); spectrum samples (Mg, B, Br, I, Sb, As, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb, Cd, etc.); samples of seawater quality (Mg, B, Br, I, Sb, As, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb, SO42-, CO32-, NO3-, salt level, Eh, pH, etc.); biological and chemical carbonate samples (CaCO3, FeCO3, MgCO3, MnCO3, etc.), and total radioactivity samples.

- The quality control of sample analysis shall comply with Circular No. 62/2014/TT-BTNMT dated December 9, 2014 of the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam.

See more details in Circular No. 14/2024/TT-BTNMT, effective as of October 15, 2024.
