Recently, the National Assembly of Vietnam has approved the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, officially effective from January 01, 2022.
According to Clause 1 Article 75 of the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 of Vietnam, domestic waste generated by households and individuals is classified as:
- Reusable and recyclable solid waste;
- Food waste;
- Other domestic solid waste.
Particularly, according to Clause 1 Article 79 of the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 of Vietnam, costs of collection, transport and treatment of domestic solid waste shall be calculated based on the quantity or volume of waste generated instead of the current "leveling" mechanism. Specifically, charges for domestic solid waste collection, transport and treatment services payable by households and individuals shall be calculated as follows:
- The charges shall be calculated in accordance with regulations of law on prices;
- The charges vary by quantity or volume of the classified waste;
- If solid waste are reusable and recyclable and hazardous waste is classified, households and individuals are not required to pay charges for collection, transport and treatment services.
Above are notable contents of the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 of Vietnam in comparison with the Law on Environmental Protection 2014. The roadmap for the implementation of these two regulations must be no later than December 31, 2024.
