Interventions to prevent malnutrition in new rural communes of Vietnam

On July 6, 2022, the Ministry of Health of Vietnam issued Decision 1858/QD-BYT on Guidelines for implementing prevention interventions Physical malnutrition in children under 5 years old to implement the national target program on building new rural areas 2021-2025.

According to the Decision, the priority group nutrition interventions for children under 5 years old in Vietnam are as follows:

(1) Priority classification based on the prevalence of stunting in Vietnam:

- Priority communes for group A: stunting rate > 30%.

- Priority communes for group B: the rate of malnutrition and stunting ranges from 20-30%.

- Priority communes for group C: the rate of malnutrition and stunting is below 20%.

(2) Nutrition intervention activities according to priority groups in Vietnam:

- Nutrition interventions in groups A and B communes:

+ Comprehensive intervention on all causes of children's nutritional status.

+ Priority activities: strengthening and improving the quality of the network, especially the collaborators/village health workers; Supply of equipment and materials…

- Nutrition interventions in priority communes of group C:

+ Implementation of interventions mainly focuses on the period during and after pregnancy.

+ Priority activities include nutrition education communication, vitamin A supplementation, multi-micronutrient supplementation guidance, and the treatment of acute malnutrition...
