Guidelines for the Elderly on Practicing a Healthy Lifestyle to Prevent Covid-19

Recently, the Ministry of Health issued Decision 1588/QD-BYT on professional documentation titled "Temporary guidelines for managing the health of the elderly and people with chronic diseases at primary health care levels in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic" and "Guidelines for health care and Covid-19 prevention for the elderly in the community."

in order to prevent and improve health to avoid COVID-19 in particular and diseases in general, during the social distancing period at home, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases need to:

- Change behaviors and lifestyles that are harmful to health: quit smoking, reduce alcohol and beer consumption;- Implement eating policies that are sufficiently nutritious (1700-1900 Kcal/day), balanced, and healthy (including starch, protein, both animal and vegetable fats, vitamins, and minerals), with plenty of green vegetables;- Ensure to eat 3-4 meals a day, eat hot food, and food should be boiled, steamed, or cooked until soft. If the food intake is not sufficient, additional nutritional milk should be consumed, 1-2 cups per day;- It is recommended to eat less meat, replacing it with fish, shrimp, or crab. Each week should include at least 3 meals of fish, 3 eggs, additional yogurt, etc.;- ...
